Sliding Rhythmic Delta and Beyond |
World Music Workout |
||||||||||||||
|
This class is a rhythm, open tunings, improvisation and expression workout focusing on making you a stronger musician both rhythmically and harmonically and expanding your ears so you can more quickly learn new improvising skills for many kinds of music. Beginning with the concepts and sound of deep Delta blues roots (Charley Patton, for example) well gain deep understanding of how ALL open tunings work, giving you new easy ways to improvise solos and create interesting accompaniments. Open to intermediate players Bob will teach how to get a good tone with a slide and illustrate advanced techniques applied to improvisation. Set sail for adventure! |
World Music Workout will bridge the gap from blues & swing to other African based music, from calypso, rhumba, ska, 4/4 African, 68 African, all the way to the magic upside down 6/8 from Madagascar/Reunion. Bob will show that although the left hand work is fairly simple in terms of chording in standard tuning, the action is in the concepts and in the many right hand rhythmic variations. Harmonically, new improvisation tricks and ideas will be learned, and a new understanding of several types of simple song forms will be gained. | ||||||||||||||

| Even though many of the obscure country blues artists are all but forgotten by history, their recordings represent the very best and most creative playing in the genre. In addition, many of the more popular artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charlie Patton, and Lonnie Johnson, who have many recordings to their credit, recorded many gems that seem to have been overshadowed by their popular hits. Woody will be teaching these obscure tunes as well as songs by Arthur Pettis, Blind Joe Reynolds, Buddy Boy Hawkins, Clifford Gibson, Willie Walker and others. The material covers standard and open tunings and spotlights a variety of syncopated picking and chording techniques that can be applied to all styles of Country Blues. | |||||||||||||||

Mississippi Sounds |
Piedmont Blues and Beyond |
||||||||||||||
|
Focusing on the playing of Skip James, John will illustrate many of the unique and unusual chord formations in open tunings including open D minor, and will explore the various right hand picking techniques that are found in this rich tradition of guitar and vocal music. John will show how these sounds can add a broader dimension to all styles of blues guitar. |
The Piedmont style originated in
Georgia and the Carolinas and is characterized by the melodic ragtime and
blues style common to such players as Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake, and
Rev. Gary Davis. The class will present a basic repertoire in standard
tuning and will focus on giving the student a strong and steady
alternating bass and a syncopated melody line. This class is designed for
students who are comfortable with basic fingerpicking and would like to

Toolbox classes are geared to the beginning student and are designed to provide the basic foundation for fingerstyle and slide blues guitar. Though designed as introductions to styles, these classes are also a great refresher for more experienced students. Each scheduled morning and afternoon class is 1.5 hours long and runs for the entire week at the same time period each day. On the first night faculty introductions are presented to explain the details and levels of all the classes so students can choose the sessions they wish to attend. Students may choose one class for the entire week in the morning, and one class in the afternoon. There is no pre-registration for classes. The late afternoon workshops enable students to study with staff members other than their class teachers. There will be daily workshops including 'slow jam ' and vocal training and guest instructors will offer one and two day guest workshops in a variety of subjects. Students may also request workshops of their choice and ask for private instruction.
