Scampbell just pointed out that some of us have been on this forum for ten years as of this month! Raise your hands!
Actually, for the Forum's tenth anniversary, it would be fun to hear memories from anybody who's been hanging here for a while.
I know one of my first posts was an open invatation to my house for a barbeque. _________________ Website - YouTube - facebook |

I remember the title of my post nearly ten years ago, which caused the creation of the infamous dark side: "A Sad Day For America"-- back in 2000 when Bush got selected. It pissed a lot of people off.
Looking back.....Was I so wrong? |

| Summer of '99, sat under a tent with Woody, listening to his hopes & dreams for something he & Bob were going to call 'International Guitar Seminars' |

I met Bob at a small club in Germany in the winter of 98. I wasn't going to go to IGS because I didn't play slide. I'm glad he talked me into it.
Sitting under a tree at Columbia (next to Paul Heumiller, future owner of Dream Guitars) in the first class at igs 99. Woody ripping on some Rev. Davis and proceeding to say "I'll show you how, it's really pretty easy." Our jaws were dropping, but the way he said it made us believe it would be easy. And ya know what, the way he taught it did make it easy (or as easy as possible). I still play that first song, "Oh Glory." _________________ Website - YouTube - facebook |

I met Bob at the First Annual National Steel Guitar Festival in Brevard NC in 1997. He later convinced me through this forum to attend IGS at Columbia in NYC. The impact of that trip on my life is immeasurable. From Bob to Woody to Mary to John Cepas to Orville, etc. and all of the great students and connections, it was incredible.
I never contributed to the Dark Side, but I always enjoyed reading it. And, Bob, I don't recall getting pissed off. |

There were two camps, east & west, that eventually overlapped. I was at the first West Coast session in Santa Cruz. I didn't know if there was a previous session in NYC before that. It was a life changing experience. The first day there was so intense and exciting, that I just layed in bed all that night and couldn't sleep. Actually, that was good practice for the years ahead! I believe this forum started in November 1999, ten years ago, as Kurt pointed out. So great to see so many of us around that long and still hangin' out here.
I do remember seeing Bob at NAMM in January 2000, and the first thing he said to me was, "We're in trouble now. The bad guys won". I knew he was right, but how could I ever guess how right he was. _________________ An original IGSer. |

| Hard to believe it's been ten years. I actually came on board just bit later. August 2000 after returning from my first IGS at Santa Cruz. Some of our 'Favorite Moments' are recalled here - eh Kurt?http://www.guitarseminars.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000431.html |

Yes, I missed the 10 year club by a year too. My first IGS was Santa Cruz 2000. What a great camp! It really did change my guitar playing life (for the better). I think I was the only one there with a nylon string guitar.
I studied with John, Orville, and Mary. And my main goal was to get that alternating thumb going. Excellent experience!

| Nov '99 for me (under the guise of "bills"). My only IGS was San Diego (02?).The highlight for me was Pat Donahue's swing class, with Mike Dowling sitting in on occasion. I still do Pat's version of Ain't Misbehavin' when I play out. |

| aww heck, I first signed on here on the forums, because I was in the military back then around 1999 and I could never get to the workshops, so I got all my info and recorded workshops from my brother ( webnash) and poked around the forums here gathering information.. great stuff |

old timer checking in. Of course my ten year anniversary isn't for a few more weeks, so I won't quite crow.
I went to the first California IGS. Little did I know what a momentous assemblage I was walking into. I arrived late, and Haley was doing paperwork for me in the office. Meanwhile there was a gentleman named Orville Johnson sitting there with a dobro. I thought he was just another student. Then he cut loose with some. "whoo-ee" I thought. "I am most definitely out of my league."
I used to lead the "most posts" standings, but I'm sure Steinar and probably Knuckle have zoomed past me. |

Yeah, Orville does rock, as we all know.
Not quite oldtimer here, first IGS was Seattle '04, next one was NYC '05.
Gooooood times! |

I attended a whole bunch of IGS sessions in Santa Cruz, San Diego, Seattle and New York. It was a fantastic experience studying under some of the finest guitar players (and teachers) in the world. Bob Brozman, Woody Mann, Orville Johnson, Mike Dowling, Martin Simpson, John Cephas, John Renbourn, Mary Flower, Lasse Johansson, Steve James, Pat Donohue et al. Those were some lineups Bob and Woody managed to cobble together. It changed my whole perspective on making music and exposed me to new genres, sounds, rhythms and techniques. It expanded my own efforts at improvisation, and it was such a pleasure to sit up all night watching, playing and listening to jam after jam.
Best of all were the amigos I made from all over the world. Playing, listening, talking and drinking. What a fine way to pass a week. A fantastic venue for forging relationships among like-minded souls. This forum initially was an outgrowth of IGS and became an avenue of communication and renewal of old and new friendships. I know it’s changed a lot over the years, but for me this forum is like the first girlfriend. You never forget her. |

| Not quite 10, but getting there. IGS 3 years in a row at Columbia. Greatest times, greatest memories. I've been bad about staying in touch. Some are gone and now I can't, John, Chris Ramey. I remember Ola and Katalina. Man, can Ola play! Tom, playing laptop slide on a square neck National. Bob and Woody, those wee hour jams, and sweet aromas. John Renbourn weaving tapestries on his guitar. John Cephas for making me feel connected. Ah, Valerie, somewhere Mississippi John Hurt is smiling. Kurt, Cham, Frank, and a slew of others for good times, and fun jams. To all the instructors for their time , patience, and professionalism. And to all the other behind the scene people that made it all happen. Does it sound like I miss it? You bet I do. Greatest times, greatest memories. This forum is a testament to all this. Yours in the blues from Hoodadoo. |
