Dear Fellow Musicians and Guitar Pickers,
My name is Dennis Montgomery and I work as a Computer Specialist at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix, Herbert Kieckhefer Branch. One of my functions is to familiarize the children with computer related technology.
I have a plan for creating a musical CD with children.
My plan is as follows:
Select three to five songs for the children to learn and perform.
Pick Select ten or to twelve children as singers and another ten or to twelve children as musicians
Rehearse the songs.
Using a Roland Micro BR lay down three or four tracks to digitally tape the songs.
Transfer the material from the Micro BR to a computer.
Convert the songs to MP3s.
Burn the songs to discs for the children to take home and play on their MP3 players.
To do some of this we need musical instruments such as harmonicas, kazoos, tambourines, cow bells, small drums (most any rhythm instrument) maybe keyboards and microphones.
If you are interested in helping please send them to me at the mailing address listed below.

Here's my best contribution: A design for a quick, cheap ($1.00 tops) and L O U D kazoo:
Go to Home Depot or Lowes or any other hardware store and purchase the following for each kazoo you want to make:
1 piece 3/4" pvc tee
1 piece 3/4" X 1/2" reducer bushing
Some 3/4" pvc pipe (optional)
Take a small piece of waxed paper and tear or cut it a little bit larger than the reducer bushing. This will serve as the kazoo's membrane.
Next, simply lay the piece of waxed paper over any one of the openings on the 3/4 inch tee. Shove the reducer bushing over the waxed paper into the hole in the tee. It is important to keep the waxed paper straight and even so that the membrane is fairly even in the hole. Don't jam the bushing down too tight.
Next, take a piece of the 3/4" pvc pipe (any length you'd like ... it just serves to give the kazooist something to hold on to and adds to the look) and stick it in any one of the remaining holes in the tee. You're done.
All you have to do now is play the greatest kazoo you've ever heard.
"How do you play it" you ask? Simply wrap your lips around the end of the bit of pipe and hum (don't blow) a tune. The louder you hum the louder the kazoo sound.
Need a "kazoo song"? How 'bout an original Shishka Bob song? Click this link and then scroll down to "When I'm An Old Man".

Shishka Bob, thanks for the tip.
When I get my next paycheck I will pay a hardware store a visit. The directions will be passed on to our art specialist. The art room will also be making shakers via bottles and beans.
Even so, we still can use instruments, gear, and suggestions.
And, Shishka Bob, I plan on playing your recording to show the kids what can be done musically with a little imagination and heart.

L, you should go ahead and bump this thread every once in a while. Its hard to tell when sendable stuff might come our way.
I like those clubs. Does yours do the invite folks from the community to lunch thing? The one where they tell you about Denzell and so forth? |

Larry, I will endeavor to keep this thread moving for I have been thinking and planning this project for months now and I have no intentions of failing.
As to your question. Fund raising has usually been done by our administration with assistants from the personnel and children from the different branches. To my knowledge we never have had luncheons where we have invited local celebrities to chit chat.
Because of budget cuts some of our old mode of operations may change. Your mention sounds like a good idea.
Thanks for the suggestion and question. Keep them coming.
