Thanks to Bob, Woody, all the instructors, and staff,
and all my fellow students.
It was one of the highlights of my life and will hopefully continue to
be year after year.
I've never met such a group of wonderful and fun people.
Jim Campbell....2001 San Rafael IGS Alumnus
The sixth annual International Guitar Seminars workshop was held August 7-13 in Washington State at Seattle University. The staff included Woody Mann, Bob Brozman, John Renbourn, Mike Dowling, Orville Johnson, Robert Tilling, Trevor Laurence, Dave Mullany, Tim Sparks, Jennifer Scott, Rene Worst, Michael Dunn, Steve James, Mary Flower, Ray Piper, and Del Rey.
We will soon announce details of the 2005 IGS workshops

The Acoustic Blues, Slide, Swing, Fingerstyle and World Music workshop is an intensive musical study program where participants come from all over the world to create an international community of musicians, all living together and sharing the learning experience. The non-competitive atmosphere and well-balanced program provide students with the perfect setting for learning new styles, taking chances, and interacting with other musicians. Casual enthusiasts and professional guitarists alike will benefit equally from the seminar.
Our approach is to use the repertoire and techniques of the traditional music masters as a jumping off point for further musical exploration. Our focused program explores the broad spectrum of acoustic blues, swing, slide and world music as well as musically related genres such as Hawaiian slack key, ragtime & gospel, and jazz. A wide variety of workshops such as vocal training, first time performing techniques, rhythm circles, and music theory will also be presented outside of the regular class schedule. Whether you just started playing acoustic blues this year and want to get going in the right direction, or youve been playing professionally and want to further develop your craft, you will find what youre looking for at International Guitar Seminars (IGS).
WHY IGS?
The IGS staff is chosen not only for their world-class musicianship but also for their willingness and ability to share their knowledge. They are all veteran performers, writers, recording artists, and exceptional teachers. In addition to offering the highest level of in-class instruction, an IGS workshop offers students as much time out of class to interact with other musicians and advance their musicianship as they receive in class. Between classes and workshops, and after evening events, students inevitably find themselves learning privately or in small groups, sitting in on a jam session with one of the worlds greatest players, or discussing music with other students and teachers. IGS is an international community of musicians drawn together of a common interest. It is a place where everyone from the beginner to advanced player can learn and interact in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
By the end of the weeklong total immersion in music, students are jam-packed with enough musical ideas to last at least until next year. International Guitar Seminars is not just about learning new music, its also about an approach to music that offers a new perspective that will allow you to make great advances in your playing long after the workshop has ended.

This year we again expanded our program to provide returning students with new and challenging subjects and first-timers with an environment where they will feel welcome and will find instruction appropriate to their level. Our beginners program offers classes geared specifically to guitarists with little or no background in fingerpicking and acoustic blues. We have also added guest workshop classes, daily rhythm and vocal workshops, and more one-on-one instruction. The guest workshop program allows us to invite teachers to join us for 2 days each to teach and jam with students and to hold workshops in the late afternoon. This years guests include Mary Flower (blues and lap-style), Michael Dunn (gypsy Django swing), Ray Piper (Brazilian jazz), Del Rey (blues & lap-style).
The day consists of classes, late afternoon workshops, and guest workshops. Each scheduled morning and afternoon class is 1.5 hours long and runs for the entire week at the same time period each day. On the first night faculty introductions are presented to explain the details and levels of all the classes so students can choose the sessions they wish to attend. Students may choose one class for the entire week in the morning, and one class in the afternoon. There is no pre-registration for classes. The late afternoon workshops enable students to study with staff members other than their class teachers. There will be daily workshops in rhythm and vocal training and guest instructors will offer one-day guest workshops in a variety of subjects. Students may also request workshops of their choice. Topics will be limited only by imagination. There is time throughout the day for individual practicing, spontaneous workshops, jams, and private instruction. In the evenings there will be staff concerts, a faculty de-constructed jam, and, the highlight of the week: an all-student concert where everyone is encouraged to perform (with staff accompaniment if requested we cant say no!).
We have no limits on late-night jamming, so please arrive well-rested and ready to PLAY!

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS:
As we enter into our sixth season we are pleased to see the progress of our student body. Several of our students are pursuing careers in music and have gone on to become performers and teachers. Many IGS alumni have taken their music in new directions, are playing with other musicians on a regular basis, and are simply enjoying their playing more. Student jam sessions are popping up more and more often at our Guitar Forum. Reports of both staff and student reunions are coming in from all corners of the world. It seems that no matter what part of the world we travel to, there are at least a few familiar faces in the audience from IGS. Were pleased with the way the community has grown and taken on a life of its own. Thanks to you and our remarkable IGS staff, we have succeeded in creating one of the premier guitar seminars in the world.
