Is it my imagination or do blues musicians with names that extol some physical infirmity they might have, tend to get more attention and recognition. If you are blind man, or lop-earred, short legged, hounddog, catfish, groundhog, pocketgopher, chickenlovin, rooster crowin, fishkissin, junkyard guitar player , you'll tend to get a bit more recognition if you add this to your handle. Does any of this hold true or do you still have to know how to play guitar? I need to know this before I send out my next Bio sheet? billk IP: Logged |

Reverend is always good. We have a "Rev" in Germany Rev.Rusty & the Case. On his poster he poses with a Dobro M33 but he don't have it with him at the gigs. He's not very "Reverend" either. I'd say go for Rev. Bill. You can probably buy a title from a dodgy southern university somewhere. But....you don't realy need it because (1) you bring your National to your gigs and (2) you can play it too ! See ya in June IP: Logged |

Whats in a Name Hey Eddie, Good to hear from you, thanks for the kind words. Glad to hear you are coming back to I.G.S. , you and your friends across the pond are always a treat to jam with and you are responsible for addding the "I" to the I.G.S. I've progressed musically since last year at I.G.S., more than the entire decade before. It was a matter of self preservation. My family was going to banish me from the house if they had to listen to the tired ol' stuff I'd been playing (and going no where , I might add) I've learned that alot of those licks are attainable if you want them bad enough and if you know how to get there. The sessions I attended taught me alot about how to listen to the stuff I have been trying to emulate. Be sure to bring your toothbrush and a guitar, pretty much everything else is provided. Anybody else out there listening, come join us, food is excellent, accomodations are great, Musically, the instructors will stretch your boundaries. Plus, your family will let you play in the house again. Rev. bill

Well, we call our duet the Burning Bullfrogs but no animals have been harmed at our gigs, ... yet! Kay

Hi Kay, We have three types of frogs in the midwest, great plains narrow mouth, plains leopard, and the striped chorus mouth. They all have interesting vocalizations, though none of them have the depth and resonance similar to a bullfrog. Do you find that more herpetoligists (amphibians ie;study of) show up for your gigs? or do you have protests regarding your cruel name? Ted Nugent said: you can't grill it if you don't kill it! Do you have regular type of legs? If I'm ever in your area, I'm comin to your gig. don't mutate and keep the pond clean. billk IP: Logged |

A friend of mine had some bullfrog tadpoles in his backyard pond. One of them failed to make the transition to bullfrog. They kept that big fat tadpole around for a year, and just noticed it's growing legs!
that frog plays a pretty mean slide, too. IP: Logged |

I remember reading somewhere that you can create a "blues name" as follows: A PHYSICAL AILMENT + A FRUIT OF YOUR CHOICE + A SURNAME OF A US PRESIDENT IP: Logged |

You might get more attention, but do you really want to known as something like "Bone Dog" Bill Keitel? Think how you'd feel if a local reviewer interviews you and calls you "Bone Dog"? I suspect the old Blues Masters never got interviewed and nobody called "Blind" anything. IP: Logged |

quote: Alan Lomax recorded Blind Willie McTell for the Library of Congress. The recordings and the interviews are fantastic. (My favorite McTell recordings) Lomax specifically states that he's recording "Blind Willie McTell" and addresses him as "Blind Willie". McTell refers to some recordings he did as "Blind Samuel" and they also discuss the death of Blind Willie Johnson. I think "Bone Dog" Bill Keitel sounds kind of cool. Damn, this is an old thread. Well, unfortunately, there's already a John Cowan out there. Younger, blonder, plays bass in his hip newgrass band, the John Cowan Band and way more famous. I once bought a washboard on ebay and when I signed my name to a message the seller wanted to fly it out here so he could meet me.-G- So, since everybody at PT, on Weenie Campbell, and here and other blues sites knows me as waxwing, I think my soon to be released CD will feature Waxwing John. Call me Wax. All for now. IP: Logged |

"Bleeding Gums Murphy" from The Simpsons sends up this bluesman name thang perfectly, even though he was supposed to be a jazz saxophonist. Tangentially, I always liked "Big Leg Emma" as a song title. IP: Logged |

Here's the name generator. Based on this my blues name is Jailhouse Money Washington. If you, too, yearn to bin your old identity and assume the mantle of a venerable African American bluesman, the procedure is quite straightforward. Simply consult the following three lists. From the first list, take the name against the initial of your first name. From the second list, do the same with your middle name. From the third, your surname. Et voila! A=Fat; B=Muddy ; C=Crippled; D=Old; E=Texas; F=Hollerin'; G=Ugly; H=Brown; I=Happy; J=Boney; K=Curly; L=Pretty; M=Jailhouse; N=Peg Leg; O=Red; P=Sleepy; Q=Bald; R=Skinny; S=Blind; T=Big; U=Yella; V=Toothless; W=Screamin'; X=Fat Boy; Y=Washboard; Z=Steel-Eye A=Bones; B=Money; C=Harp; D=Legs; E=Eyes; F=Lemon; G=Killer; H=Hips; I=Lips; J=Fingers; K=Boy; L=Liver; M=Gumbo; N=Foot; O=Mama; P=Back; Q=Duke; R=Dog; S=Bad Boy; T=Baby; U=Chicken; V=Pickles; W=Sugar; X=Cracker; Y=Tooth; Z=Smoke A=Jackson; B=McGee; C=Hopkins; D=Dupree; E=Green; F=Brown; G=Jones; H=Rivers; I=Malone; J=Washington; K=Smith; L=Parker; M=Lee; N=Thompkins; O=King; P=Bradley; Q=Hawkins; R=Jefferson; S=Davis; T=Franklin; U=White; V=Jenkins; W=Bailey; X=Johnson; Y=Blue; Z=Tubbs IP: Logged |
