Nice topic eh? The reference is to acrylic nails. After reading the recent thread on singing I decided to turn off my own give-a- shit-o-meter and head on down to the local salon to get some acrylic caps. I've never done well with finger picks or my own nails, and Woody is the only guy I know who can really pull off good tone and articulation with bare fingers. So I followed Martins' example and joined the ladies at the nail place (not a comfortable thing for a basically insecure middle-aged guy. I announced real loudly that the nails were for guitar, and then as Amy the manicurist went to work I peppered the gals around me with questions like "how bout that Seahawks game" and "have ya got yer Elk tag yet". Anyway, I survived the ordeal, got home and did a little work on shaping them with a file and started playing. Damn, these are really great-why didn't I do this sooner? Anyone else out there with these, and if so how long do they last and how do you take care of em. I aked Amy but she really wasn't too familliar with this use of acrylic nails. I got 'em. They don't need any care except shaping and last about 4-5 weeks . As they start to grow out away from the cuticle (yes,I've had a few sessions in the chair)the edge closer to the knuckle starts to separate a little from the real nail. If you catch that during your Pete Townsend rhythm part, say hello to a whole new world of pain. Get them filled in. As an aside, if the guy sitting next to you on the plane is crowding your space, pull out your selection of files and start working on those nails intensely. After five minutes non-stop, hold them up in front of his face and real loud and proud exclaim " Whaddya reckon Mate?" That, combined with the Aussie accent usually does the trick. Oh Dave, for your colouring I would recommend "Max Factor-Autumn Plum" Steve IP: Logged |

I’ve done my own nails for a few years now. I made the big step and went to a nail salon first. Had my thumb and three fingers done only. Like you, to make sure they knew it was for guitar! I stopped going when making appointments became problematic. With the help of my daughters I was able to find where to buy the stuff you need and started doing it myself. I’m now at the point where I just do the top half of the nail, sort of feather in the transition and it lasts for a few weeks or longer. I rationalize that this is all OK because I keep all the stuff in a TOOL BOX. I’d be happy to provide a list of all the stuff you need if you are interested. IP: Logged |

Crack me up... Rick Bockner and Michael Friedman were visiting during a concert tour and Michael, being an acrylic guy (he has a combination picking/frailing technique that is really something to hear), went to have his done. My wife knew a great place, so off he went. The gal doing the work wasn't too great at English, but did a good job for him, however she never really got the part about "for the guitar". She kept wanting to do the other hand and, when she finally got the idea that he was only going to need one hand, asked with a sly grin, "So...what color you want?" As I understand it, Mr. Bockner came unglued laughing. IP: Logged |

All right Dr. Dave. I went to a nail salon about a week after the first IGS (after killing my real nail the first day of IGS). I love acrylic nails. I go to the nail place about every three weeks to have them filled in. Takes about ten minutes and costs about five bucks. My nails turned yellow after about three months. I asked Martin about that. He told me the same thing nail salon subsequently told me. Every three months or so you should have the entire acrylic nail replaced (instead of just having it filled in from the cuticle up). They’ll look better that way. It was strange the first time, but now I’m friends with the owners. Most of the girls know me too. The owner told me there was an article about guitar players in last months “nail salon trade magazine.” IP: Logged |

I had them done in New York a couple of days before IGS and had them done again a few times after that. I must admit it is hard to go back to just fingers after you have had them done (its for life) or as long as you intend to play the guitar. I did notice that once thay fall off you original nail is very thin almost like paper. It worth finding a good salon who knows what you want - I have tried afew places before I got it right. I'm on my third year with continuous use of the acrylic nails. Got them done before my first seminar with Martin Simpson as I had heard he had his done. I have never gone back. Mine are changed every two weeks as they grow quite fast (makes up for my hair which is gone and decided not to grow ever again). I pay $4 a nail, but it's worth it. SteveO IP: Logged |

DON'T GO THE CHEAP ROUTE ON YOUR ACRYLIC NAILS! I'm assuming here that most guys don't do a lot of research before they choose a nail salon. My wife did, though, after her fingernails were damaged by going to an inexpensive salon. I may sound alarmist, but it's only because I care. If you're not paying very much for your nails, there is a pretty good chance you're getting MMA, a dental adhesive, to bond the acrylic nail to your own. What are the risks of MMA? "Inhalation may be fatal as a result of spasm, inflammation and edema of the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema. Symptoms may include burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting. If absorbed through skin, MMA is extremely destructive to the tissue of the skin and eyes. It targets certain organs in the human body including the nose, the liver and the kidneys." As a bonus, the MMA bond between your natural nail and the acrylic nail is stronger than the bond between your natural nail and your finger, so if you break a nail (accidentally slam your finger in a door, etc.), the acrylic nail doesn't just come off, your nail does too.
"Overall appearance. If the environment around you is unsanitary, chances are so is your nail tech. MMA has a very offensive and strong odor so be suspicious of any unfamiliar and offensive odor at your nail technicians station. Nails that are unusually hard and difficult to file. Nails that are difficult or impossible to remove in conventional solvents manufactured for the removal of acrylic nails. Improper sanitation techniques. All tools should be sterilized and fresh towels laid down for each client. The nail tech should always wash their hands between clients. Is your operators license clearly displayed? Are employees wearing masks? Those who work with MMA know of its toxicity and will often wear masks to protect themselves. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Your inquiries should be answered in a professional and educated manner. There is no reason that the operator should be secretive about their product brand names." here's a beauty professional's network with info: It's even in York (Pennsylvania): [This message has been edited by John Bushouse (edited 09-24-2000).] IP: Logged |
