Not the forum for movie reviews but this is a very popular movie among the ladies. So if you are like me you may end up seeing this one because...well I think you get it. Johnny Depp first plays some blues slide on a National, then plays what appears to be a Macaferri while doing the Gypsi jazz thing. The rest of the sound track is interesting as well with some Andean rhythms and some french and other gypsy things going on. The actual movie was good. Something about it didn't feel right but I can't put my finger on it. So if you have to go, there is a little something in it for you. The guitars stole the show for me; I was disappoited that they weren't mentioned after the fire. (Hope I'm not spoiling the movie for anyone.) Did you catch who played the slide part; thought it was pretty catchy. IP: Logged |

Honestly I thought Johnny Depp himself played the guitar! He is a great actor and could have faked it but it looked like he was throwing down the chords during the Gypsy jazz tune so I figure he must a least know how to play a little. If you make 5 million a movie and it take 2 months to make what do you do with the rest of your time? IP: Logged |

I believe Johnny Depp began his career as a guitar player in a rock band before being cast in movies. I understand he's a decent guitarist, at least decent enough to play air guitar and be somewhat believable! I dug that scene with the walnut sunburst triolian. G. IP: Logged |

I thought I had succesfully avoided this chick flick on it's first run around here. Now it looks like I'll have to rent. Arnold needs to make a guitar movie! IP: Logged |

I had read recently an interview with Johhny Depp in one of the guitar mags (GP?) about the movie. He confirmed his rock band roots and he said that you hear him playing the parts you see him playing in the movie. He also said that he had a lot of time during the shooting to hone his chops and really enjoyed getting back to playing. True or Hollywood hype? We'll never know unless he segues into some live performances. Maybe with the Bacon brothers opening for him? [This message has been edited by Corn Dog (edited 03-14-2001).] IP: Logged |

I haven't seen it yet but a customer came by a couple weeks ago and said that he played a guitar "just like that one you made" (I made a Triolian copy a couple years ago) Off this subject but my favorite two movie goofs involving guitars is the astounding ability for Ralph Macchio (sp?) to instantly go from sliding his Tele in Open E to playing Paganini-like passages in standard. (Crossroads) I also envy Steven Segals ability to turn a plain Dreadnaught into a D-45 just by picking it up (Can't remember the movie but that was the highpoint) IP: Logged |

if true, Johnny joins the now-legion legions of movie star rockers: Keanu Reeves (Dogstar) and Dennis Quaid (the Sharks) get more press these days for their bands than their acting. (kind of appropriate, when you consider what terrible actor Keanu is). I get the sense, however, that Depp is a lead player in his band, and I'm guessing the other two guys are singers and rhythm or bass players. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Yeah, Crossroads! Let's see: we set up a whole movie as a coming-of-age of a bluesman, as Ralph learns wisdom from blues sage Willie Brown (I kept expecting him to say "but Mr. Miyagi!") about how the blues is not about Robert Johnson's lost recordings, but about "a good man feelin' bad." And how does it resolve? into a contest with Steve Vai, the debbil's own guitar player, to see who can play more notes in a given period of time (extra points for rock star wankiness) and then Ralph trumps the chump by pulling out his Juilliard Paganini licks (in open E, no less), Yep, that's the spirit of the blues. the Seagal movie had to be the one where the Bronx goombah goes to Appalachia and tries to help the po' white folks there beat the evil toxic waste dumpin' guy. Seagal movies are their funniest when he's at his most earnest. SEE the leather-jacketed hero save the Alaskan tundra by kicking some major ass! IP: Logged |

seriously old thread Im bumping here.. but.. Hey.. just thought since we're on the topic of Johnny Depp and guitar playing that I'd mention a few things.. He got a guitar at age 12 and stole a chord book and became so passionate about guitar playing that he dropped out of highschool to go "make it big" with his band, hehe.. though that decision eventually led him to LA.. and well.. the rest is history Also.. he plays guitar on the ending song to Chocolat (the one that plays during the credits i believe, as the movie fades out..)I'm pretty sure, as well as the gypsy dance scene.. He has also played slide guitar in one of Oasis' songs (Fade In-Fade Out) because the band memeber was too drunk.. it can be heard on their album Be Here Now. He has also recorded a song with Iggy Pop titled A Hollywood Affair and wrote the guitar-played theme for his character Agent Sands in the movie Once Upon A Time in Mexico. Heres what Keith Richards had to say about Johnny..(!!) OK, thats enough of my fun johnny guitar facts, LOL. IP: Logged |

Once Upon A Time In Mexico gave us a handful of actor musicians. If you watch the end credits, you see that both Johnny Depp and Antonio Banderas wrote songs and performed them for the movie soundtrack, and Salma Hyack sings a solo also. There seem to be a slew of multi-talented actors out there these days. Maybe I'll take up screenplay writing..............B. Ryan IP: Logged |

Depp plays what's heard in the films mentioned. He's actually a pretty good player who is actively interested in jazz, esp. the style presented by one Django Reinhardt in the Quintette du Hot Club de France. IP: Logged |

I read somewhere that Depp composed that song he plays on the triolian. It was a blend of the Django Reinhardt tune with one of the blues tunes also mentioned in the credits. The name escapes me now. [This message has been edited by double5s (edited March 12, 2004).] IP: Logged |

If he would've played Bottleneck Blues guitar in, "The Pirates of the Caribbean,"it would've been a perfect movie. IP: Logged |

Did no one mention that Johnny Depp is or was in the band 'P,' which had a major label record out a few years back? I dunno... Keanu may even be a good bass player. They're both better than Ethan Hawke. Dan IP: Logged |
