Seems like I remember reading somewhere, maybe liner notes, that Sam Chatmon is Bo Carter's brother. Bo was a member of the Sheiks. So, if Bo or the Sheiks wrote it, I could imagine Sam taking some credit for it. IP: Logged |

My attention was drawn to this discussion when I was searching the web for variations on the lyrics to Sittin' On Top Of The World -- of which there are a multitude. I thought the topic had been done to death too, but I did find another useful link: http://www.bluegrassmessengers.com/master/imsittin8.html According to the above-site, the first recorded version was in 1925 by Art Gillham (Oct. 24, 1925, New York: 141190-2). My hunch, though it is just a hunch, is that the song existed in some form as a "Traditional" tune before it was recorded. At least the structure and basic melody, if not the lyrics on the chorus. If I have any luck tracking down some more info on the history of the song, I'll post it. I like this game. What song should we do next? ~ Shuggie IP: Logged |

Along with this subject, if anyone knows where I can get a copy of this CD : http://www.mymusic.com/product.asp?myptr=froogle&curr=0&muzenbr=461679 I would really appreciate it. It is back-ordered or out-of-print everywhere (including where I just linked you to). IP: Logged |

quote: Odd that they include Patton's "Some Summer Day" but not other songs (like Tampa Red's "Things About Coming My Way" for example) that use the exact same melody line and different lyrics. IP: Logged |

Quite a few years ago I "learned" a really nice version of this song from John Cephus at Augusta, but when I got home it was not on my MDs and I only had scribbles and scratches on my notes! Have any of you also learned John's version that you could share with me? IP: Logged |

Richard Shindell's new CD has an excellent version of "Sittin' On Top Of the World". In fact, I got to this thread because I was hoping someone may have posted a link to the tab for his version. IP: Logged |

I found this forum while trying to track down the version of Sitting On Top of the World found in Kazan's 1957 movie `A Face in the Crowd'. Turns out to have been Brownie McGhee, who also appeared in the movie, at least according to: http://imdb.com/title/tt0050371/board/nest/38984006 IP: Logged |

I realize this is a little late in posting, but I had the fortune to know Sam Chapmon in his latter days.I was raised in the Mississippi Delta from the early 60's. He died in Darlove, Mississippi in the 1980's. From discussions I had with him, he said he had written Sittin on Top of the World, back in the days of the MS Sheiks. He said some "white man" had recorded him during the 20's in Misssissippi and that was the last he heard of it until he saw that someone else received credit for the song. At his funeral, a young lady played Sittin on Top of the World on his 1910 Martin guitar. Her last lyrics were "You know Sam's gone, and he ain't worried, cause he's sittin on top of the world." Hope the may be of some use to someone. IP: Logged |
