I have sifted through this page and have failed to find a discussion on Silvertone/DanoElectro guitars. I see that they have re-issued these fine gems. I love the feel of the necks on these "cheap" old guitars. I rescued my first one in 1984 from a punk rocker at the Fantasy Theater in Cleveland, Ohio who was going to play it with a hacksaw for $35 and a beer. Anybody care to add their thoughts on these forgotten lipstick babes?

I've had one of the re-issue Dano Longhorn basses for a couple of years. A real guitar player's bass. Light, great tone, funky looking, short scale, and cheap. I run it through a Hartke Kickback 12 with the aluminum cone. Always sounds good! The only problem I've had is finding a place that stocks short scale bass strings. Many of the places that sell these basses don't have the strings for them.

I've collected old pictures of Jack Bruce, Noel Redding, and other early rock guys playing 'em. Apparently, due to their materials, they did not hold up well on tours. Some guys bought several of them and just used 'em till they broke up. Others reverted back to their heavier Fender basses when touring. I'd like to hear a vintage '60s model but I haven't found any in my area.

I'd recommend this to any guitar player that has an interest in playing bass as well. The latest re-issue models even let you adjust the intonation!

now that you mention it,it is really weird that a whole mess of bottleneckers haven't talked about danos more.i haven't played one in ages but they are kinda neat slide guitars.i have an original NOS neck and an asian dano body that i keep meaning to put together ,but for some reason never do.

i have a '60 silvertone, w/one pickup w/all the tuners on one side of the headstock in red metal flake (not that you can see the paint job too well thru the punk rock band stickers & "custom" paint marker paint job.) i paid $55 for it in '81 or so. in my punk years it served me well as the guitar i played when i broke a string on my strat, which happened every gig. they are super guitars. currently mine is my open g electric.
maxxo: i'm from pgh. do you remember who was the cleveo punk (or his band) that you got your silvertone from? just curious.

Hey, good to hear that the danos/silvertones are still kicking around in some people's gigs. I have 3 originals. One very badly beaten that I basically have kept because of the neck. The other two are in great shape considering thier age and relative unexpected life. I run mine through a pre-CBS ProReverb that I replaced years ago with 100 watt EVs. I know, a little over kill but what the hey, I was a kid. These gems still screem loud and raunchy through an old tube amp... and true they are an awesome guitar for bottle necking. During my Zep phase I used a pencil to raise the nut and played it with a bow.(See old Pics of Jimmy Page) I later found that the e-bow ( for those that remember them) had a better effect. And where did I get the one from the punker? It was at the Fantasy Theater on Detroit and 106th. The bands were A Rash Of Stabbings and The Mumbling Skulls. As for the name of the guy who sold it, I can't remember....but who can remember much during those times.

I have one of the reissue Danelectro U1 that I use for slide sometimes. My main electric slide guitar is a ValPro84 (the white resoglass map guitar with neck and bridge pickips).

Copper top Les Paul Style with Coke Bottle head stock. Single pick up. My favorite one. On another note, I also like the aluminum screwed down nut. Wish my other guitars came with them. (78 Gibson S/G standard (alpine white), 76 Telecaster Deluxe, 78 BC Rich Bitch (10 string), Any thoughts on aluminum?

I've an early 70's Silvertone Telecaster rip-off. Sunburst. My 2nd elec. guitar. Absolutely wonderful to play. Very nice neck and damn near perfect intonation. I love that guitar.

Flash to early nineties....there was a spoof movie of the Brady Bunch, the 2nd movie where Greg goes thru his hippie phase, and plays a guitar.
Thats THE guitar in that movie. Freaks like me notice that sort of thing.

(CmdrPiffle sulking away now wondering why in the hell he admitted to watching a Brady Bunch movie---preparing excuses as he types)

I'm not a huge fan of old-funky-but-cheap guitars like the Dano - personal taste, mind you.

But there I was in the local old-funky-but-cheap music store today and there on the rack was an old one-pickup Silvertone. I don't know the model, but I do know that if I were willing to part with in the neighborhood of five hundred dollars, I would also get a case with an amp in it.

Is that a total ripoff, a bargain, or somewhere in between? I didn't get a chance to play it.

They did have a couple of Kay archtops - one with horrible action and surprisingly nice tone, and the other with action so low you couldn't play a note on it. $275 and $375, respectively.

At $500.00 +/- it sounds like you are in the ritzy end of that neighborhood. These go for $350 or so on ebay, although I think that for these beasts there is a lot to be said for the chance to try it on before buying. I got a single pickup amp-in-case (its the model 1448) at a local shop for $275 last year. Its a 3/4 scale size, painted on metal flake paint finish, crappy tuner, awesome sounding guitar. Seriously, the old lipstick pickup in the masonite body is somehow magic. I play mine through a Peavey Delta Blues 210, and just smile. I don't think that the necks are adjustable, the bridge is a piece of rosewood. It wouldn't be my only electric, but it is really a kick to play.

I second wunderdog. I "collect" Silvertone stuff (cheap collectables) and have been searching for a two pick-up Dano silvertone on e-bay for some time. Searching my not be the right word, since there are lots and I never buy one. I guess "shopping" would be correct. Anyway, $500 could buy you two or three of them on eBay. Check it out.

Here is the "holy grail" of Silvertones - the 1448 two pick-up Dano and amp in case, for only $125. Of course, someone painted the guitar with house paint, but it's
eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2533635968&category=2384

Here is a model similar to mine for under $200
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2534092880&category=2384

Here is a single pickup model, WITH AMP in case, curently under $200.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2534131033&category=2384

There are also a few around $300, and one for $40 (early in auction). There are always lots listed on eBay, and I think your seller is well out of the market price. I will get one myself eventually.

Brad.

Thanks for the reality check. No, I wasn't on the verge of cracking open the checkbook - just making conversation, really.

yeah, this one music store is cool because they have all this old stuff that no one else carries. But it's all WAY expensive. Though they're nice people - they wouldn't look askance at some haggling, I bet.

or maybe I'll just bring a slide in and try it out.

Hi all, have a question that one of you may know where to point me to, to get answered.

Background - I have an old Silvertone Archtop Acoustic (pretty but needed a little 'cleanup' to make it more playable)which I am currently have kitted with some kind of interesting pickup on the neck that my local guitar geek guy is doing, and adding a 'thru peg' jack with all wiring running inside to be able to use it as a relatively clean (and a bit funky) looking acoustic electric.

My question - Need a decent hard case for it. I had been keeping it in one that seemed a bit 'snug' but looked ok to me, only to have my guitar 'surgeon' guy tell me that it is too tight a fit for it and should be gotten rid of, lest it eventually ruin the work I am having done presently, cinching down on the the guitar too tightly. But where you find a decent hard case for an archtop that is a good enuf fit that it won't be bouncing around inside of a 'generic' case? Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated. Drop me an email note at opuslife.geo@yahoo.com Thanks all, good to find the forum.

I'm doing research on Sears Silvertone guitars and trying to compile a list with chronology, model numbers/name, serial numbers, specs, and a photo gallery. Please send me photos and specs on your guitars.

I'm particularly interested in archtops.

I have a re-issue double cutaway with seal pickgaurd like Pagey used to play. I bought it back in 1997 or 1998 and its one of my favorite guitars.

Chambo, I used to see ads for the Reso-Dan conversions in the various Brit Guitar mags that have become popular over the past half dozen years or so. I believe that they were stock re-issue models that were cone converted by someone in the UK. I've posted about them before here on the IGS Guitar Forum but had never found anyone who had actually played one. What do you think of yours?

Sold it to pay the mortgage that month, but I think that you can't go wrong with them, very easy to play and have a nice Asworth transducer in that does'nt need a pre-amp. Loudish acoustically, nothing like a National single cone, but still good to play on.

Have a look here
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/julian.mullen/resodan.htm

Theres an article and a few pics etc. If you email Julian Mullen, he'll get back to you straight away. I still have a Danelectro U2 and they are my favourite electic instrument, the pickups are great, although not as raw as the older 50's and 60's ones that I've had, but they are'nt falling apart.

There are quite a few other electro-resonator people about, you'll have fun looking. Look at Pete Woodman's site
http://www.petewoodmanguitars.com/page2.htm

Amistar
http://www.resound.uk.com/Amistar/index.html

Molonator
http://molonatorguitars.com/

or go the other way and just use an electric for slide Danelectro couple hundred $$$ if that or a nicer option and get a Michael Messer "King Guitar" by Dave King

I love silvertones. I have trouble beleiving that the amp in case silver tone with all pegs on one side are so cheep. Here in canada I've seen two laitly for $450 each no case just guitar. I'm seriously concidering buying one. I have an acoustic, a sixties electric, and know of a bunch that friends have. I can get all the serial numbers for what ever specificly is of interest. I also have a bunch of harmonies and other related stuff. I think a registry and a book would be so amazing. I'd buy one for sure.

To the person owning the Sears Silveretone Guitar: I had a Sears Silvertone that my parents gave me when in 1964. I played the guitar quite a bit. Through the years I moved it from under one bed to under another, then to storage, and when we downsized from a 5-bdrm house to a 2-bdrm apartment I sold it to a pawn shop because none of our 5 kids were interested in it. Now our youngest son (33) is married to an accomplished pianist and he has taken quite a liking to music. Now he is interested in my guitar. I told him I sold it about 10 years ago. I would like to buy one near like it and give it to him to enjoy. Does your guitar come in its own case with a built in amplifier? How much would you want for it? Wow, this is like a walk down memory lane. Anxious to hear from you.

Hi noondlit. If you look at the date stamp on that post you will see that it is over a year old. If you click the icon to the right of the date stamp, you will see that twh7920 never posted again on this forum. Perhaps he's a regular lurker, but I kinda doubt it. Here's a link to a Silvertone guitar with amp in case on ebay: Silvertone. If you're not that familiar with ebay, watch the bidding on this guitar and others for a while. These come up pretty regularly. When you feel comfortable, I'm sure one will come up. It is always best to wait 'til the last minute of bidding and put in a proxy for the max that you are willing to spend. Good luck.

All for now.

I've owned dozens of these guitars as well. I'd like to point out that Silvertone was a brand name owned by Sears. It was used on many Sears products, not just guitars. There are tons of old radios and record players out there with the name Silvertone on them. Many of these are highly collectable as well.

Silvertone guitars were made for Sears by at least 4 differant companies. The largest maker of Silvertones was Harmony. Their Stratatones, Rockets, Sovereigns, etc. were all branded as Silvertones and sold through Sears. Next comes Kay. Kay also made guitars for Sears, Mongomery Wards, and other retailers. Regal was another company that made Guitars for Sears as well as others. Most of the Oahu Hawiaans out there were made by Regal. Regal also made a version of the Dobro that was licensed by National/Dobro. Dan-Electro came later, in the late 50's/early 60's.
These were in many ways the cheesiest of the bunch with the chambered body made of pine with masonite top and back plates. I had a single pickup model with amp-in-case. Mine was black with sparkles, the white pebble table around the edge. Mine was so mint, including the case and had the original tubes which were stamped Silvertone. I bought mine at a flea market for $30, kept if for many years and eventually sold it for $300. When I first got mine, I played bottleneck on it and found it had great tone thanks to the lipstick pickup, but the short scale neck didn't suit me at all and the tuners were a joke.

I currently have no more of these guitars. I had fun collecting them, but never played them much and they took up space which was becoming scarce. If I get a chance to buy one at a flea market, I usually grab them, but resell them for a quick profit.

I went to see Keb Mo this past June. Keb usually plays mostly flat-tops and Resos. When he plays electric, it's usually his Epi Sheraton. When I saw him he was switching between the Reso-Rocket and a Harmony Monterey. It's hard to believe he'd rather play this thing in concert than his Epi!

I had 2, a 1 pick-up, amp in the case model that I got in '73 for $25 (no case), and a short-horn
Dano bass that was $17.50 (they wanted $18) from a Tyler, Tx pawnshop in '78. Loved them both, but under no circumstances should these type of guitars be sumerged by 3 ft of swamp water and left in a de-roofed storage unit for 9 days during August in coastal Mississippi. They just won't hold up very well....

I'll add one more tidbit. Harmony, Kay, and Regal were all based in the Chicago area and are often referred to as the "large Chicago Guitar builders".

DanElectro was based in New Jersey. The lip-stick tube pickup came about after DanElectro bought a whole truckload of lip-stick tubes for pennies on the dollar. These were real lipstick tubes that they decided to use for a pickup housing.

Not all DanElectros had the amp-in-case. From what I have heard the single-pickup model I owned had the amp with no tremelo. The 2-pickup model had the amp with tremelo. None of these amps had reverb.

DanElectro also made the Corral electric Sitar. By the time this was introduced, the sitar craze was just about over and they sold very few.

Okay, I just thought of another important point. Before DanElectro was reissued, excellant guitars based on the Dano designs were being built by a company called Jerry Jones. These look like Danos with the lipstick tube pickup, but were far superior to any of the originals or the reissues. They used high quality hardware, solid wood, maple necks, etc. These are pretty reasonably priced and well worth looking at. Check EBAY.
