It sounds incredible but it’s true: Oua Oua by Kanui and Lula is No. 1 this week on Austria’s pop top 40. The original recording from the thirties has been heavily edited (added electronic drums, bass and keys, sampled oua’s at the beginning instead of the instrumental introduction), but the two original acoustic guitars (standard and steel) can cleary be heard throughout. In case you wonder how a Hawaiian tune from the 1930s could go straight to the top of the charts in Austria in 2001, it’s quite simple to explain: The TV and radio commercial of a big Austrian mobile phone provider featured the tune as background music, probably because old Hawaiian music is very similar to Austrian traditional music but nevertheless sounds exotic enough to gain people’s attention, as it did in this case. People obviously asked the commercial company so frequently about the tune that a remixed version was released. The best of all: additionally to three different remixes, the CD features the original version of the tune in it’s sonically restored glory. I don’t know much about Kanui and Lula, except that they were a worldwide touring husband and wife team, recording mainly in Paris, France, in the thirties. If visitors of this forum could give more information, I would appreciate it. Now I think I’ll go and buy a chart topping record for the first time in my life!!! IP: Logged |

Hi Leo--Great to see you in Trnava, and what a great little jam we had at 2-4 AM, we must remember the Zmyrzlina Song! Your lap playing is growing so fast! Kanui and Lula, Hawaiians living in Paris in 1929-3?, good friend of Tau Moe! Played SOLO on Oua Oua! According to Tau, he did this standing up with a squareneck tricone, not with a strap but with a braided silk cord. Tau says he drank quite a bit and sometimes Tau would help him stash his pay, so there would be some left for Lula at the end of the week. She was a dancer and singer. They made about 8-12 titles, I have maybe 8 of them, some with 3-4 musicians. But TOMI TOMI and OUA OUA are just Bill Kanui, serious focused power!! Original 78rpm issues are on French and British parlophone. But both have be re-issued on CD. IP: Logged |

Thanks Bob, for the quick response and info. I bought the hit record and the original version reveals that of course you're right - he's playing all alone. I've seen a photograph of Lula somewhere with a ukulele and I heard their recording of Little Grass Shack, so I always thought she was the uke/rhythm guitar player in the duo. I won't forget the Zmrzlina song. The environment obviously was especially inspiring to my lap playing. And don't forget, I studied with the best teacher. IP: Logged |
