I've recently discovered Lonnie Johnson on a couple of compilations, and want to correct this gap in my cultural vocabulary. For someone who owns no Lonnie Johnson, and can only buy one Lonnie Johnson CD, which one would you recommend?

And while we're at it, same question for Memphis Minnie.

A good starter for just one CD from Memphis Minnie is "Pickin' the blues" from Catfish records - 24 tracks

Lonnie Johnson is a tougher question to answer because he was more diverse, and had a lengthy career. His music also crossed over from early blues, almost into jazz. For his early years, try either of the two Yazoo cd's, or the Roots n' Blues series by Columbia called "Steppin on the Blues".

Kill two birds with one disc and get the BGO release Blue guitars Vol 1 and 2 with Eddie Lang and Lonnie Johnson together-you'll see why these guys are idolized by people like Woody (and me).
