This was addressed somewhat already with this thread:http://www.guitarseminars.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001411.html. May I suggest you listen to the many 30second samples at Emusic? They have 5 of his CD's in their subscription service. You get the first 50 mp3's free if you enroll in their trial plan [This message has been edited by Adrian Freed (edited February 11, 2002).] IP: Logged |

I own a 2 disc set called LONNIE JOHNSON the essential. There are 36 tracks on the two cds. Overstock.com has it on sell for only $9.81. Here's the link: http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PRODUCT&PROD_ID=284126&cid=64666&fp=F IP: Logged |

Then there's the over-indulgent box set Lonnie Johnson / Original Guitar Wizard (4 CDs) for under $20. IP: Logged |

Lonnie's early recordings are a lot better than his later stuff. IP: Logged |

If you are going to own any Johnson, get the two CD's of Blue Guitars. Lonnie and Eddie Lang. Truly essential listening for any guitarist. The "Essential" CD set is a good value for the money and has some of the Johnson / Lang duets. However, Lonnie is someone worth exploring in depth. Another great item is the Lonnie Johnson TAB/ CD from Stefan Grossman. It has a good cross sec tion of material and the tab's. http://guitarvideos.com/books/5001.htm If I was going to have ONE purchase I'd probably go for the CD and Tab. It's about a dozen tracks of his earlier stuff. However, he's really worth filling the bookshelf with. IP: Logged |

I do think that his earlier work is seminal/pivitol in modern music. While genius is an overused word, I'm sorry to use it again and call him a genius. However gotta disagree that you should only listen to his early works. The period after his "rediscovery" is by no means loaded with action-packed guitar work and innovation of the earlier years, however the man sings and plays with tremendous depth of soul. His duets with Elmer Snowden are a treasure. Dylan also talks about his conversations with Lonnie Johnson and how Lonnie's ideas transformed Dylan's approach to music; - it was about rhythm and timing- I think Prof Bob. might understand it more clearly than I did however. FYI Dave Van Ronk also talks about Lonnie Johnson in his autobiography. According to Van Ronk, Johnson didn't fingperick guitar the same way and with the the same fluency in the 1960s as he did in the 1920s, in part because he had stopped playing for years. The folks revivalists in the 1960s demanded that he play the way he had 40 years earlier, and this made Johnson sad (& it pissed off Van Ronk, too). IP: Logged |

I didn't understand what Bob Dylan was saying about Lonnie Johnson. Maybe three is the new two? I'd be happy to type it all in if someone could translate. Didn't Van Ronk say that Lonnie said, "They want me to play like I did 40 years ago - how am I supposed to remember that?" or something similar? I got the idea that it really frustrated Lonnie.
