Bob Dylan's got a version of 'Delia' on his World Gone Wrong cd. Now, many think this is based on McTell's version, but I have Stefan's book Ragtime Blues Guitar on Oak, and a version of a song that Gary Davis did, which Stefan calls 'All My Friends Are Gone' is tabbed out, and has a somewhat similar progression to Dylan's 'Delia', and many of the same lyrics. In addition, Dylan's chorus is 'All the friends I ever had are gone.' Stefan says in the book that some of the arrangement is based on Davis's 'Cocaine Blues', and I hear some similarity between that song and Dylan's 'Delia' as well. My question is, where did Bob get the melody and lyrics? Is there a song called 'Delia' that Davis does, and if so where is it, and is there a song called 'All My Friends Are Gone' by Davis and, if so, where is it? This has stumped me, and I'm really curious about Bob's inspiration on this tune. Any help would be great. Thanks a lot. Jon IP: Logged |

Delia is one of my favorites-everybody seems to have had a version. It is based on the following " Delia Green, age 14, was shot and killed by Moses "Coony" Houston, age 16, in the Yamacraw section of Savannah (characterized for me by a local historian as "poor, black, and violent") at about 11:30 pm on Christmas Eve, 1900. She died early Christmas morning in her bed at her home. She had been receiving Coony's attentions for several months, but when Coony claimed her as "his girl" she denied it. This enraged Coony, who shot her without saying another word." Cooney is often Curly or Curtis in different versions of the song. WillieMcTell, Blind Blake, Gary Davis all had a version, or so I hear-I don't have any on record. Dylan, David Bromberg, Johnny Cash, Martin Simpson and Woody all have versions-All slightly different, and all with different takes on the murder. I think I like Woody's best, he hasn't recorded it as far as I know, but I've heard him do it a few times. If anyone has a clue as to recordings of it by Davis or McTell I'd love to know how to find them. IP: Logged |

The earliest recording is probably the 1924 version by Reese Du Pree and known as "One more Rounder Gone". It was a 78RPM Okey 8127 and is available from document records It was available under the same title as sheet music in 1911. Based on the other songs Dylan recorded on the same album, we might suppose that he learned it from a Blind Willie McTell record. He may also have heard a Rev. Gary Davis rendition directly in New York. Dylan also covered "Jesus Met The Woman At The Well" (on the 1961 East Orange Tape -- probably learned through Dave Van Ronk), "Death Don't Have No Mercy" (on the May 1961 Minnesota Party Tape), "It's Hard To Be Blind" ((aka "Lord, I Wish I Could See" from Davis' 1935 ARC session -- on the May 1961 Minnesota Party Tape and the Dec 1961 Minnesota "Hotel Tape"), "Candy Man" and "Cocaine" (both from Minnesota "Hotel Tape"). Dylan worked with Johnny Cash (Nashville Skyline) so there is another possible path. From Robert Shelton: Before the end of 1961, he [BOB DYLAN] was talking about marriage... planning the ceremony in detail. One winter night at the White Horse, he told Suze and me how it would go: 'We'll get Reverend Gary Davis... to perform the ceremony. Naw, he can just sing the ceremony. And we'll have all the singers there.' (No Direction Home, London, 1987, p. 131) [This message has been edited by Adrian Freed (edited March 29, 2002).] IP: Logged |

Having recently gotten tab of this tune from Woody, does anybody know the RGD lyrics, or are they close (enough) to any of the aforementioned versions? Which RGD album is this song on? Thanks. -C IP: Logged |

Terrific discussion of a great song! I'll toss in 2 more items: Dylan's description of the song, from the World Gone Wrong liner notes: quote: And here's a 1962 picture of a young Dylan and Rev. Gary Davis. Perhaps Dylan is showing off his version of "Delia" to RGD, who is suitably impressed by the youngster's skills? IP: Logged |
