I'll be out in the Tacoma, WA area for the next two weeks. Anyone or any place I should see while I'm there? Any local info would be great.

I may be able to sneak away for some guitar fun although I'll only have my Traveler and my Korg PX3 with me. Post something here or email me (I've changed my address here to a hotmail address for web access) and I'll get back to you.

Thanks!

my brother lives nearby in Puyallup and works in Tacoma. He's a guitarist of sorts (a beginner who may or may not still be playing much), but he might be able to point you to some local flavor. Let me know and I'll ring him up with the heads-up.

Thanks guys! Pearl Django is playing tonight in Seattle. Chris Robinson (Black Crowes) is also playing solo. I'm going to try to catch Steve James. I found blues, acoustic, and Irish open mics in Olympia that I might check out as well.

Tom, anything else your brother can recommend would be great.

Waxwing, thanks again for the heads up on Steve James and Del Rey. I saw them tonight and it was a real treat. FYI, they've put out a DIY cd of their duets. They were great live but I can't comment on the cd yet. Del Rey plays a mean reso uke! She likes loud tiny instruments but doesn't play Charango. Great voice too. Nice smokeless venue. Steve James is always a kinetic kick. He should do endorsements for those caffeine mints he eats like candy.

Had fun at the EMP (Experience Music Project) . It's a pretty skewed collection of stuff but worth the visit. I saw some cool footage of Peter Green with the original Fleetwood Mac line up doing "Oh Well" and footage of Mike Bloomfield playing with Paul Butterfield. I'd never seen either of them play before. I got a jam goin' in the demo area with a random bass player and drummer and we drew a small crowd and some applause. The drummer was awesome. The demo/learning kiosks they've set up are impressive and lots of fun.

Hope to hit the blues jam on Wednesday and the Celtic jam on Thursdsay in Olympia.

Played electric blues at Charlie's Bar & Grill ((360) 786-8181), 620 Fourth Avenue in Olympia. It's a Northwest juke with a pool table. They have a blues jam on Wednesdays from 9-12. Nice group of players with vintage gear. I knew I was gonna have fun when I walked in. There was young guy wailing a la Mike Bloomfield on a Les Paul Gold Top through "Stop" with the organ guy doing an Al Kooper thing.

They had organ, bass, drums, and setups for two guitars and harp. Volume levels were perfect to my ears; just loud enough to get some sweet sounds from the amps and fill the room properly. I plugged my Traveler into a '60s era Musicman. Can't beat that tube tone! We got folks dancing. A harp player joined us for two tunes. A female vocalist came up for one of the tunes.

Lots of good communication between the players and good listening/responding as we played. No egos, just genuine love of the music. Luckily for me, there was only one other guitar player wanting to play and he wanted to close. They kept me up there for almost an hour as we ran through a variety of tunes and tempos.

If you're in the area, have a guitar with you, and want to play some electric blues with very friendly tasteful players, get down to this place.
