Has anyone experienced pain and/or weakness in their fingers? And what have you done for it? For the second time in the last year and a half I am having pain, weakness and minor swelling in my left index finger's knuckle; accompaied by that feeeling when you need to crack your knuckle (which I end up doing, but never used to). It is most obvious when I apply pressure in a lateral direction, such as using vibrato. But even simple things like turning a faucet or door knob can be painful. I've tried taping it, ice, advil, warm-up exercises, and rest. The last time it just went away on its own (after a few months), though by then I was bareley playing. I know that a trip to the doctor is in order... but I'm uninsured and simply can't afford it (ironic for a scion of MD's). Any advice? IP: Logged |

The first strategy that may help is "RICE" R: Rest I: Ice C: Compression E: Elevation The last two are relevant more for knee and leg injuries. The idea of the ice (or cold water) is to increase the blood supply. Taking Advil for a few days can reduce the swelling and eliminate the pain. I dont like to take it longer than that because it works so well for me I cant tell feel when the problem has gone away. IP: Logged |

Nip it now before it becomes chronic! I speak from experience - shoulder problems. For me, ICE IS KEY! Ice and Advil. You may also have some arthritis in that joint so some of those analgesic arthritis formulas might work better than Advil. I recommend Glucosimine Chondrotin, a supplement for strenghtening joint cartiledge. Finally, stretching is super important to prevent injuries. If you know or can hook-up with a good physical therapist, they can show you finger, hand and forearm stretches and therapies, and give you paper diagrams so you can do it yourself. Good luck and Gesundheit! Brad. IP: Logged |
