Mike Dowling put on a day long workshop in Forum member David Sieglar's home in Mill Valley on Wednesday. Mike is a great teacher with an incredible range of material to offer. We covered open tunings, standard tunings, blues, rags, a little rockabilly, some helpful theory, some of Mike's original songs and anything else you might want. If you get a chance to attend one of his workshops you won't be disappointed. He and his wife Jan (who was also present) do week long intensives at their Wyoming home, for up to three students (no beginners) at a time which sounds like a good way to step up one's level a play. I managed to miss workshops from Mike at the last IGS's so I was really happy to be able to take this small (8 or 9 person) workshop near my hometown. I heard nothing but good things about his teaching from other IGS students and i already new he was a great player from his concert. His reputation as a great teacher was certainly confirmed at this workshop. His relaxed manner and straightforward style got us quickly in what felt like a slow, steady learning groove. As I review all that we covered I realized that mood was deceptive. He had as working! What really suited my learning style was the way he switched between showing us a technical or musical idea and then teaching an arrangement that illustrates how to use it. It was a great antidote to all those dry scale/chord/theory books and the books full of tab with no helpful analysis. I also enjoyed Mike's arrangements and seeing some of what were to me unusual and effective approaches he employs,. For example, he uses the slide on his ring finger and he showed us a nice ragtime tune in the key of G in Open D which involves simple moves from barres at the 5th, 7th and 2nd frets. This was an interesting constrast to the way Martin Simpson and John Renbourn use Open Tunings to free themselves of the full barre. Thank you very much Mike and thanks also to the other workshop participants and to David for hosting it. IP: Logged |

Well put Adrian. I too am amazed at how many doors opened in one session. His performance the next night at Schoenberg Guitars was outstanding too. -Charles IP: Logged |

Good to see you guys! That was a great day and a fantastic little concert at Schoenberg's! Mike and Jan are heading north and will be bouncing around Washington and Oregon starting tomorrow for those who might be able to take a class or catch a concert. Not to be missed! IP: Logged |

I can 5th that. I've been to several of Mike's workshops and one should not be missed if the opportunity is there. Brad. IP: Logged |

I'll echo the sentiments so far. I took both morning and afternoon classes with Mike at IGS San Diego and it couldn't have been better! If you get a chance to hear him in person or study in a workshop you will be glad you did. IP: Logged |

Mike taught at our place a couple of weeks ago and I found him to be the best possible teacher, player, and all around good guy that I could imagine - and maybe the funniest. His videos are also outstanding. IP: Logged |
