A few basic questions: 1) Does adding a pickup to an acoustic guitar affect the tone adversely? 2)Does it affect the value of a guitar? I have a mid 80’s Martin D35 which probably won’t be collectable in my lifetime. How about for a really expensive guitar (new or old)? 3)Under the bridge vs. installed in the body? – Cost vs. sound 4)Any recommendations for mid priced ($800- $1500) guitars with factory-installed pickups?

Stu, Check out the Pick Up The World pick ups at http://www.pick-uptheworld.com/ I installed one on my 31 triolian without permantnt modification by putting the pickup on top of the biscuit and running the wire under the tailpiece with the jack clamped in an insulated clamp held in place with the end pin screw. the sound is good if you don't hit the strings too hard as the pickup is sensitive. I installed one on my German Silver Tricone that I built and the tricone sounds excellent Suprisingly good! The big advantage to the Pickup The World is that the preamp for these is external so you do not need to spend the expense of a preamp for each guitar. The preamp has a volume control and I use the "Line Driver" that clips on my pocket or belt and it has an off position for switching guitars without having to involve the sound man. I am sure that many will champion the Highlander which are excellent pickups but if you need several guitars amplified the Highlander will cost you twice as much as their preamp is internal and the battery is external. With Pickup The World only the pickup is internal, the preamp and the battery are external so you only need to buy one preamp. We have used these on a live spot on Channel 3 and at the Monterey Blues Fest and had excellent results. For recording I have mixed the PUTW with a Rode condenser mic with excellent results. Big Mike Simpson http://members.cox.net/blueswizards/ IP: Logged |

Doctor Stu: We actually need more info for our diagnosis. Are you planning to be playing with a full band at high stage volume? Coffeehouses solo? The occasional outdoor 50th birthday party? Wood guitar or reso? With that said, here's some professional advice from someone that has owned a lot of acoustic guitars with pickups, but still prefers to use a mike whenever possible... The professional addition of a pickup to an acoustic guitar does NOT affect the tone adversely. It can affect the value of a guitar: however your mid 80’s Martin D35 is not too dear to add a pickup to... I would not add a pickup to a really expensive old guitar, but I had one installed on my new (and expensive)Goodall. Under the bridge vs. installed in the body: Installed in the body (?) may mean an internal mike. Best natural sound, more feedback at high volume. A mixed system (bridge and mike) is nice, but a bit costly. I would strongly consider a Highlander system, either just the bridge or the combo. Expensive, but sounds very nice, and of course Bob is an IGS sponsor. There's a guy in the same area as Bob and National that does great installations, I am told. Contact Jeffrey Sipress for more info on this. Cost vs. sound: Cheap pickups usually sound cheap. I have a mid-range Fishman Rare Earth in my Goodall, sounds okay. Just okay. I had a B-Band in my Bourgeois, it sounded a bit better. My wife has a very expensive Countryman mike in her Martin, sounds really good but feeds back at high volume. Any recommendations for mid priced ($800- $1500) guitars with factory-installed pickups? Yep, I think you might be able to grab a National Radio Tone Bendaway with a Highlander for that... Taylor have decent pickup systems and have models in this range, as does Martin. It depends on what you plan to play, where, etc. Now take two aspirin and call me in the morning, unless I'm out on the links.
