Back when I was a classical guitarist, listening to blues guitar, I bought a vinyl lp with Nick Katzman and Ruby Green, which I liked a lot. He plays a wide range of blues from Delta to Gary Davis.
Now that I've been playing blues with some skill, I just put his lp on my turntable and was blown away with how really really good he is.
Does anyone know if Mr. Katzman is still performing or recording?

Yes, I bought that album a long time ago in Australia and it came with a tab book. I remember learning my first tune in Open C from it.

That web site pretty much answered my questions. He's based in Germany nowadays.
I wonder if any of those Kicking Mule lps have been put on CD. He is an amazingly good country blues guitarist.
I'll have to do a search on one of those CD sites and see what I can find.
Thanks all.

Nick Katzman and Ruby Green had at least two albums on Kicking Mule. Some of the songs they played were re-released on a two volume "The Best Of Kicking Mule" CD on the Laserlight label. Also some japanese guys began to re-release Kicking Mule stuff in the nineties, I don't know if the did the Nick Katzman albums though. I think the laserlight CDs are out of print.

For those who have any interest in Mr. Katzman's music, I sent him an e-mail. I asked if he might have any other CDs with the acoustic blues music he plays so well (perhaps German CDs since he lives in Germany these days). I will excerpt part of his reply to me:

Nick Katzman wrote:

trying to save up enough money to get some recording gear so that I can finally get down to business after all these decades.

I must say, I used to really hate my old recordings, but I've gotten used to them over the years. I'll probably feel better about them after I've recorded a new (hopefully better) CD. I've spent an enormous amount of time studying 13-course baroque lute for the last 3 years and also play alot of electric blues, as you could tell from the website. but my main music is still blues & ragtime. Most of my gigs are solo gigs and I tend to
concentrate on Gary Davis, Robt. Johnson and John Hurt. With a smattering of my own tunes, of course. Alot of that crazy neo-classical ragtime material has been replaced in my repetoire by newer, not-quite-so-weird composition in that style...a style that blues audiences seldom want to sit still for.

I do have the old LP's on CD, so if you're interested I can sell you copies.

FYI, Nick Katzman will be performing April 30, 2004 at The Good Coffee House in Brooklyn, NY. Apparently this is a rare US appearance for him since he relocated to 20 years ago Germany. This is the same venue I saw John Hasbrouck at on Feb 6 (review pending). Great intimate place to hear music and I plan to be there if possible.
