I recently had the honor of meeting legendary Delta bluesman Dave 'Honeyboy' Edwards, and was delighted when he agreed to autograph my Dean resonator. I provided a black Sharpie pen, and he signed on the back. I am wondering what (if anything) to do to preserve the autograph. FWIW, it's on an area that won't get rubbed much if at all while I'm playing. I was thinking about some kind of spray lacquer. Anyone ever dealt with this? Thanks in advance, IP: Logged |

You should have had him sign a copy of his book...I do have one of those signed. I'm not sure what laquer would do to the finish. Is it just metal, or polychromed? Maybe you can use what artists use to protect charcoal, and pastel drawings, a type of silicone spray. BEFORE you apply anything to your guitar, do a test run on another object signed with the same type sharpie to be sure it won't make it run before it drys. Whatever you choose to protect the autograph should be tested on something else first as hoodadoo suggested. Make sure that the solvent in the protective spray (clear lacquer or what have you) doesn't dissolve the sharpie lettering. IP: Logged |
