Jomo, Oh my God! I just saw him last week and was going to see him Yesterday but I never heard from him. Do you know what happened? I know he's had a number of health problems. I am really sorry to hear this. Chris was a great human being and a very polished musician. Jim IP: Logged |

This is not news I want to hear. I just emailed Chris on Tuesday, and enclosed some pictures of my 55' J 45. This is very upsetting, I was looking forward to seeing him again in New York in June. I am so sorry to hear this. I know he was very involved with IGS, and I was lucky enough to get one of his slides, and he gave me his last copy of his cd he had with him. If there is anything I can do, please let me know. Maybe because of his involvement with IGS there could be some kind of a scholarship fund created in his name to help students, something, anything. Here is a picture of Chris that I took this summer at IGS in New York. . I just thought it was a nice photo of Chris at the IGS concert. [This message has been edited by hoodadoo (edited April 18, 2003).] [This message has been edited by Administrator Freed (edited April 18, 2003).] Adrian, thanks for the help with the picture, it is appreciated and means a lot to me. I didn't have the heart to ask for details. I know his back was killing him on Wednesday, and he was breathing hard. IP: Logged |

this is shocking news. i found him to be a terrific person and will cherish the bottleneck that he made for me. i just emailed him yesterday and thought it odd that he hadn't responded because he was usually very quick to reply. may he have found perfect peace. IP: Logged |

Sad news and a true loss to our IGS family. In his Hawaiian shirts, telling stories about his days on the road with Jesse Fuller, playing blues and ragtime like a seasoned pro...he will be missed. My Winin' Boy slide (the best glass slide I've owned) just got more valuable to me. IP: Logged |

A sad day. Chris had been in many of our thoughts this last week due to Brewbird's post about the National style O. I will miss him at IGS and miss our discussions at the various guitar shows. I didn't know him well, but he was one of those kind of guys that seems like a lifelong friend after 10 minutes of conversation. Do yourself a favor and enter his name in your search engine. There's a lot of stuff on the net about him. He had a interesting past. He was a well known folk star in Japan in the 1960s, and also had a career as a male model. One of the truly sweet guys and characters I've met through IGS. Rest in peace, buddy, and we envy the fact that you're with Patton, Johnson, Fuller and all your heroes. IP: Logged |

This really takes the wind out of my sail. Its a real reminder to us all how short life really is. For most of us IGS is one short fantastic week a year but the connections that we make there, I think, last much longer. IGS is a community and we lost one of our own today. IP: Logged |

This is sad news indeed. I remember a bunch of great stories from IGS NY '02. And guess what, Chris is in almost every story. I'll try to type a few together this weekend. Somewhere, I have a tape of him playing "Get Behind the Mule" at 5:30 a.m. on the last night of camp. I will try to find that tape and get it onto a CD. He was a real spark plug and a hell of a performer. His new corner of the universe is rocking tonight. IP: Logged |

Kurt, somewhere I have on mini disc the performance Chris did at the IGS concert. If I can locate it, I can transfer it onto CD. IP: Logged |

I too am shocked and saddened to hear this news. I met Chris at IGS 2001 in Vancouver, and shortly thereafter he sent me several of his slides. I've recommended his slides to countless players since meeting Chris. I too will cherish my main bottleneck slide, made by Chris. IP: Logged |

As I said, Chris played the Tom Waits song “Get Behind the Mule” very early on the last morning of camp. There were about eight hard core pickers in the room. I swear it was dark when Chris started singing and light when he was finished. He hit the last guitar chord with his eyes closed, then sunk back into his chair. He open his eyes slowly but they quickly widened. He looked out the window and said, “Holy Shit, is that the sun?” We all smiled and said “Yea, isn’t it great.” He said “Oh my God, I have a flight at 6:30, how long does it take to get to the airport?” We asked , “Are you going to Kennedy or Laguardia?” Before he could answer he was gone. Our jam session was taking place in the IGS store which was 90% packed. Chris stuck his head in the door after five minutes and said, “My slides, are they packed up? Wonder which box their in? Ahh, screw it, I’ll call Trevor next week. All right, see you guys!” “…Bye Chris!” we mustered. It was like a tornado had swept Chris and his suitcase and guitar case and songs into the elevator. We just sat there laughing for about fifteen minutes. We were riffing on the image of big sweaty Chris trying to get through airport security in his straw hat and Hawaiian shirt after being up all night drinking whiskey and telling stories. Did he make his flight? Did he have his new, ten thousand dollar National Aragon with him? Did he get his slides back safely? I never got the answers to those questions. I figured I’d catch up with him at another IGS. Now I wish I would have called him last Summer. When Chris said he was gonna sing a song at 5:30, I quietly reached down and hit record on my cassette machine. I have a bad habit of not labeling things. If I ever find that tape, it will become my number one prized possession. So sorry to hear this news, Chris was a great guy who really helped me with slides, and the old 1969 Mateus bottleneck he made me is in daily use and i hope will last my lifetime. A real pal to the IGS community, too. Life is perplexingly short, we must be kind to each other. IP: Logged |

"Get Behind The Mule" is the opening track on Chris's CD. Here is a good article on his life. [This message has been edited by Adrian Freed (edited April 19, 2003).] [This message has been edited by Adrian Freed (edited April 19, 2003).] IP: Logged |

Thanks for the article link Adrian. Chris packed a lot of music and a lot of living into his time on this orb. It's one thing to shell out your $$ and hang out with music legends at summer camp, quite another to be there as they are coming up, and to throw yourself into the life with all the confidence that only a seventeen year-old can muster! He was the real deal.

Terrible news. I really enjoyed meeting and talking with Chris both in NYC and SD. So much knowkedge and experience to share and the best bottlenecks crafted anywhere. I'm glad I bought a bunch of them... Goodbye Chris, it was a pleasure. IP: Logged |

Too much bad news lately. That's a shame. I think we all had fun jamming with Chris late at night last June. He was a great guy as well as a bonafide blues picker and singer. I'm bummed. IP: Logged |

Does anyone know how to contact someone connected to Chris and his affairs? I spoke to someone today who has some of his guitars on consignment, and would like to contact Chris's family, relatives, or others who are connected to him. IP: Logged |

This is very sad news. I had the pleasure of meeting Chris at IGS San Diego. At the time I had no idea that he was such an accomplished musician. He shared anecdotes of his time on the road and his beer most generously. I feel honoured to have met him, and pray he finds his place amongst his fellow bluesmen, on the other side of the Crossroads. I was there for that very special performance of "Get Behind the Mule" - one of the most stirring and polished, as brewbird pointed out, performers I've ever seen. Though I knew him only a short time, he made memories that will stay with me forever. Thank you for that Chris. IP: Logged |

oh man, I was just thinking about him and his great renditions of "San Francisco Bay Blues", and "Get behind the mule" in the jam lounges at IGS 2002. The bottleneck I bought from him was the best I'd ever used, and it recently just hit the floor and broke. I was gonna email him this week to buy another... Yes, he was the real deal, and a great story-teller,so sorry to hear this. IP: Logged |

I too was devastated by the news about Chris, since meeting him at IGS Vancouver I had visited with him at his home and we were working on a project to reproduce some Aragon pickguards and mounting hardware, copied from the Aragon he bought from Frank at Griffon. My life was richer for meeting him, way poorer for his passing.. His son Chris jnr has taken over the email link at www.wininboy.com and can be contacted by email there. Colin IP: Logged |

I lurk here and most blues websites. I thought I would share this with ya'll. About 3 months ago I lost the tuner screw to a '34 L00. Well I spent A LOT of time trying to find a replacement. I don't know what king of screw, it is but you can't find anything in a hardware store to match it. I sent Chris a email asking if he could find a screw. He went to a friends shop and dug through a box to find the exact screw. Then he refused any payment. How many people would take that kind of time for a stranger. I didn't know him but I am positive he was a super guy. IP: Logged |

So now I find out... Chris was one of my closest friends in the 1960's, through some very magical occasions. We had a great deal of fun. Unfortunately, I fell in love with his girlfriend, so we had several years of just barely a truce in the 70's and early 80's. We later got in touch, all water under the bridge, and I even bought a car from his son during the years that were "lost" from the musical odyssey. Chris was always aspiring to light our spirits high. He was more a light as a person than as a musician. I'm lucky to have been his friend. So, almost a year after his passing, I'm finding out about it. We stopped hanging out in the same circles long ago - though last year Christopher Dylan Ramey's uncle did tell me about Chris's health problems, and they seemed grim. I just still somehow thought he was indestructible, that he could charm his way out of anything. Good night Chris. Turn out the stars. Douglas Hansen IP: Logged |

This is very sad news indeed...i e-mailed Chris a number of times regarding various bottleneck - slide making idea's and tips when we first set up our site on the Internet. Always a warm, friendly person, and most willing to help in any way he could - he'll be sorely missed. Sleep well my friend. Ian. IP: Logged |
