Just got my classical guitar signed last Thursday. It's on the front, where my guitar has a gloss already on it, and they other day one of the signatures started to smear a little when my arm accidentallly sat on it. My Mom tried some clear craft glaze, but it started to change my guitar's color. Anybody have any recommendations on what to do about saving these so they'll be protected?? A friend recommended something called Mod-podge... Big thanks!!

I asked the same question in this thread, but it's a metal-bodied guitar. There were some informative responses though.

I ended up putting contact paper over it -- the autograph is on the back, so looks don't really matter to me. I wouldn't recommend this for a good classical though, it would probably effect the sound a lot.

Sorry I'm not more help.

Thanks much!

And luckily the guy who runs the guitar store where I take lessons gave me the number of some guys that can do something, so hopefully that'll work... :P

I'm curious. Who has signed your guitar so far?

Wicked Sam!!

Well I went to see Nickel Creek a lil while ago *if you haven't heard of them, definately check them out!!*. Chris Thile, their mandolin player (who also plays excellent guitar) signed her, as well as their bassist for the night, Mark Shatz - who is absolutely amazing. I got to play a lil for him, so I was grinning all night also! Was so mad at myself though, cuz I managed to stand right behind their guitarist *Sean Watkins* outside the show, but not ask him for an autograph, and he's quite possibly my fave guitarist. Erg. Oh well - I'll be seeing them again June 4 in Jax Beach, so hopefully I'll catch him there. If anyone on here is interested and in the area, I would HIGHLY recommend going - they put on an awesome show!!

Way to go on the Thile autograph. But, damn, Roky Erickson! Man, that's too cool.

Funny I should read this thread after watching "The Banger Sisters".

My recommendation if you plan to collect signatures on your guitar is to find out how your guitar was finished and try to find an easy way to spray a light coat of the same finish over the top of each signature. I would take something to wipe your guitar off with before the signing so that the ink has a solid base and nothing will get trapped under the additional finish.

Another scheme might be to hand your autographer a sharp inscribing tool. I dont think the result would change the sound of your guitar much.

Personally I don't have my guitar signed because I plan to burn it when I win both the guitars being raffled at IGS.

Thanks Scott

That's a good idea Adrian! I need to see if I can find out what kind of finish my guitar has on her ... hmm ... I'm afraid it may be a discontinued model *I can never find it anywhere* so I don't know how hard it'll be to find that info on it ... I STILL need to call those guys my music store recommended ...

Hmm...sharp inscribing tool? That's a bit of a good idea!! I'll have to think about that one ... that is...if I could deal with my guitar being scratched...I'm afraid I'd be sobbing while I watched anyone do it ...

Willie Nelson's Trigger has some nice autographs carved into it and they don't seem to cause any problem with the sound. Of course, Trigger has other structural and cosmetic issues that must affect the sound, but it all seems to be for the better.
