I figure I would post this here as well since there are some big Mac users here.

My wife has one of the original 5G IPods. She loves it and uses it all the time. The fringe benefit has been a better appreciation of the CD library I've built up over the years and less griping about adding to it.

The drive has crashed and of course we're now into the Apple forced OS and hardware upgrade scenario. Unfortunately, she has to continue on System 9.x due to work compatability requirements so the the new IPods are out since they require 10.x.

I've popped the case on the old 5G unit and see that a Toshiba 1.8" drive is used. Seems simple enough. I'll just buy a replacement of the same, or even a larger one, right? My research says no. It seems that neither a straight replacement nor a larger one of the same type will work due to an OEM ROM on the logic card that prevents the use of 3rd party drives.

Anyone here had any success repairing or replacing the drives on one of these? Jeffrey, Adrian?

This is one of the reasons I really don't like Macs. Apple did this in the old days with their SCSI hard drives as well. This seems to be very unnecessary proprietary engineering that locks folks into their technology. Enough griping.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Cham,

Sorry to hear about the iPod. Frankly, I can't think of a quick and dirty solution other than buying a replacement drive from Apple, or scour ebay and the mac parts resellers. What I really want to say is get up to speed with OSX. Apparently there's one application that your wife needs that still requires 9, but that one surely will soon be outdated. OSX is a real pleasure. My wife also has some printing issues that keep her system in 9, but not for long, I hope. Pick up an older 8600 or G3 for a coupla hundred bucks and dedicate the machine to 9, while another you keep modern with X and your iPod/iTunes setup for compatibility with your own system.

Ditto Jeffrey's remarks about going to OSX ... after the inevitable (but short) adjustment period, I'm almost certain that you won't want to deal with System 9.

As for the the hard drive issue, have you checked out these iPod discussion groups? You may find someone who has had the same problem ... and can suggest a solution.

Smalldog.com does IPod trade-in's so they may have parts to replace the drive.

As usual, great suggestions guys! Adrian, I had looked at smalldog.com yesterday and have sent their tech people an email. I don't see any replacement drives listed there, only an upgrade process to the newer units.

Jeffrey, Russ, thanks for the upgrading encouragement. Unfortunately, that will be driven by her employer at this point. I did scour the discussion groups before posting and came up empty. We'll see what smalldog comes back with.

Thanks again!

Just wanted to put a good word in for the iPod and let everybody know what great tools these things are. I know you who have posted feel the same but many of you out there don't yet know what they are. Basically it's just a mini firewire hard drive but it'll hold every cd you've ever owned and then some. On top of that you can set up limitless play lists, put your calendar on it, and use it as an additional hard drive for your computer. They will single handedly put the car stereo makers out of business I predict. Why switch cd's every week in your car when you can have every cd in your collection available all the time?

For guitar retards, like me, they are invaluable. I can lay down a rythme track and a bass line in Reason then spit it out as an mp3 to my iPod and use it as a backing track while I stumble thru a toon on one of my guitars. good fun.

I too was reluctant to move to OSX but I finally did a month or so ago and I have no interest in using OS9 again. Make the switch.

It's good to hear you all had a great time in Seattle. I chickened out a couple o weeks ago due to some low self confidence issues. I hope I can be ready for next year.

I love my ipod. I admit I had to have the hard drive replace twice, but now it is awesome. I even put a bunch of songs from the 70's and 80's for my husband--now he won't give it back...

Why don't you just partition your drive on your mac then you can keep classic 9 and have OS X.

I took a 2nd generation 30 gig drive and back and put them onto a 3rd generation broken 20 gig unit with much success, now I have a fat 3rd generation ipod and it took me literally 10 minutes. I bought the 2nd gen 30 gig off of ebay for 10 bucks. All the drive cables and so on matched up

The iPod technology is great.

The iPod housings SUCK.

Until they figure out how to make the entire thing more durable - forget it.

IPods are disposable items w/ a 2-3 year life span.

I've got a boombox that was one of the first gen ones to play CD's and it still works flawlessly.

Low tech ? High tech ?

You decide...

I have something for you to try before you do anything else.

Hold the iPod in your hand (the way you normally do with the screen
facing you) and smack it on the right side...

I know it sounds crazy, but it *just* worked for me (my 2.5 year old
iPod died this morning with clicking noises and then no battery charge).
I was ready to go buy a new iPod.

I found the fix in a discussion group here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2237714#2237714

I can't believe it worked, but it did! The iPod came on, I was able
to play and song. It is now happily recharging.

The wierd coincidence is that after I did this (and shouted with sheer joy
when it came on!) is that I then went to this forum and saw your post!
