I just got Steve Kaul's new CD. Another IGS alumn who released an absolutely astonishing recording. Of the 13 songs, all but one are originals that left me deeply impressed with Steve's ability as a tunesmith and songwriter. Equipped with only his voice and guitar, he delivers his songs with soul and dedication. All in all, I felt his songwriting is of a very high standard and his delivery as a vocalist as well as fingerpicking and flatpicking guitarist is top notch. If you attended IGS 2004 in Seattle, you may remember Steve's good-humoured, unpretentious way and maybe also all those nice Amistar guitars that he brought along, among them that incredibly loud pear shaped tenor that I had the pleasure to borrow for the students' concert. If you've never met Steve before, you may as well want to check out his CD Utah Sun. [This message has been edited by mr mando (edited 11-22-2004).] IP: Logged |

Cool stuff - I'm listening to "Travelin' Through" right now, and it drives real good. I like the chords, especially the "raised 4th step" thing he does. Thanks for the links, David. IP: Logged |

Yeah, just pinged CD Baby and listened to the sample tracks. I didn't tie out with Steve at any IGS jams, and didn't know he was such an accomplished player and songwriter. Great driving rhythms, strong lyrics, and full arrangements for solo guitar aqnd vocals. Very nice. IP: Logged |

Great CD. And don't forget to meet Steve at one of his concert appearances if you're living in the area. IP: Logged |

Yup I agree with all the other reviews of this CD. Good solid musicianship with nice personal lyricism and an adherence to great picking traditions with a few ragas for spice. I too didn't get to jam with Steve at IGS and am honored that he sent me his work. Steve supplied all the Amistar resonators as well for us all to try out. Best wishes for you Steve!! I am proud of your efforts and getting to speak with you was a real pleasure. Ambrose IP: Logged |

Hey, Folks. Steve is a friend of mine and I heartily recommend you take the advice to check out his CD. He's a fine writer and a helluva player and really just a nice guy all-around. Steve is also "instrumental" in putting together the Minnesota Resophonic Guitar Festival -- this year he helped bring Bob Brozman, Woody Mann, Mike Dowling, Alvin Youngblood Hart and our resident local genius Pat Donohue out for the show. It's good to see his name pop up here. Matthew Fox IP: Logged |
