Over the weekend, I went out shopping. I forced myself to shed preconceived notions about brand superiority, price, "wow" factor - and just look for a quality guitar that I can play out with. I have some nice old guitars which I prefer to keep in the house, and I wanted something that was well-built, reliable and sounded good. Pretty simple criteria. I played a variety of Taylors, Martins, Gibsons, Alvarez, etc. I wanted a guitar suited to fingerstyle, with built-in electronics. I liked the cutaway just for a change-of-pace, and who knows - I may someday venture above the 12th fret. The guitar that captured my heart (and my wallet) was a Gibson. A Masterbuilt LC-2 "Sonoma". It has a cedar top, with walnut back/sides. A Schertler BlueStick pickup installed. No fancy EQ, just a volume dial inside the soundhole. Super nice case. Free Gibson hat and pick. Scale length is 24.75" (just like my old Stellas). Body is 14.75" across the lower bout, with a round bottom reminiscent of the early L-1 flattop. Body has some depth, 4.25" deep. Ebony fretboard. FLAWLESS construction. Not a single glitch that I can find. Beautiful lacquer finish. The neck is superb (1.75" at the nut), frets are beautifully dressed. I love the tone when unplugged, and I think the pickup sounds great as well. To my ear, the cedar/walnut combo produces a tone that combines the hard edge of maple with the rich complexity of rosewood. I'm playing it through an A.E.R. Acousticube, so I think it's getting the best opportunity to sound good and it does deliver. These pics aren't the best, but you get the idea. It was around $2K. I believe this guitar was actually built in 2003. It is definitely a fingerstyle guitar, if you try to strum it with a pick the tone gets rather harsh. But it loves your fingers. I'm very pleased.
