Is a half a century old Gibson LG1 worth getting at a decent price? I've found one at a rare guitar dealer (and in Australia the Gibson LG1 is pretty rare) but I've heard mixed reviews about them. Some say it was just a cheap beginner's guitar when it was built and still not worth much these days. It is in really good condition and plays well. Plus I like the idea of having an old guitar in my collection. What's too much to pay for an LG1?

I paid $25 for mine at a yard sale! best score of a lifetime.

I think it's a pretty lovable little guitar -- ladder-braced, so it's kind of clanky and mid-rangy -- doesn't do the hi-fi thing too well, it's not a "pretty" sounding guitar. But it's got a lot of midrange punch & clarity, and the neck is a dream. It does the Robert Johnson tone pretty well. Otis Redding write all his songs on one. I have no idea as to current pricing but if it's reasonable, I'd go for it.

A good ladder braced guitar is a VERY good thing. If it is in reasonably good shape (i.e. not clearly falling apart) I'd go for it. In the USA I've seen these selling in the $500-700 dollar range if they are in decent shape. Watch for structural issues though, excessive bellying of the top, loose braces etc. They were cheap guitars when they were made, a lot of novices bought them, meaning that in many cases they may have suffered some abuse in the hands of their early owners. All things being equal however, it could be quite a score. I personally prefer the ladder braced sound to x bracing. My Ladder braced pre war Cromwell sounds amazing and is the only acoustic I own that I can record to excellent effect with totally flat EQ.

Wide range out there. A really good wartime Banner LG can fetch some bucks, 3K US plus. Sometimes as much as four, although I think that's pretty steep for an LG. Beaters and mid fifties LG's sometimes go for as little as $800-900 US. Try and establish the year and what features and issues it may have.

PS - These are wonderful guitars for Country Blues and finger picking. Decent for Jimmy Rodgers strumming too. Not worth a damn for Bluegrass and a bit out of the ordinary for your garden variety rock and pop. A BROAD generalization, but explore what it will play and sound like in the type of music you play.

LG1s (ladder braced) were introduced in 1947. LG2's and 3 (x braced)were introduced in 1942.

The x braced LG2s and 3s, particularly early ones, fetch significantly higher prices than LG1s and 0s probably because the x braced models are treated by many collectors and players as essentially post war L-00s.

Ladder braced guitars sound great but don't let anyone try to sell you an LG1 for the price of an LG2. The LG1 might sound better but it definitely is worth less in the monetary realm.

Thanks folks, that's helped a lot. I'm already sold on the sound and feel of it... I just need to get it for a good price. The technical tips are very useful.
