Two great blues guitar shows coming up at the Good Coffeehouse Music Parlor in Brooklyn.

On April 28 at 8 p.m. we have Nick Katzman. Nick is a fingerstyle guitar legend, owing to his great records for Stefan Grossman's Kicking Mule label in the early 1980s. His original rags are something to behold and his intepretations of delta blues are so good its eerie--anyone who has heard him play Robert Johnson knows what I'm talking about. Nick lives in Germany these days and he only plays one venue in the States, so we're proud to have him back

May 12 at 8 p.m. we have Mike Dowling. Mike has simply amazing chops in fingerstyle blues, ragtime, slide, and swing jazz. He's making his first Good Coffeehouse appearance. Should be a great show.

Hope to see some of you at one or both shows.

A quick search brought up this old thread. I do not believe that Ruby is performing with Nick.

This other link is to a review of their classic recording and it's re-release on CD.

An "not to be missed show".

And then Mike Dowling comes to Brooklyn! Yippee! This is a long time coming and should be a wonderful evening. Who's up for brews before . . . . . . . and after?

Oops, meant to post that in here (moderator can delete the Nick thread)

Jon,

Thanks for posting that old thread. No, Ruby Green (aka Terry Garthwaite) is not joining Nick. Interesting to hear Nick say he never liked his Kicking Mule recordings (he still says that). They contain some of the best acoustic blues guitar ever put on record IMO. Nick is a perfectionist, that is for sure.

Is that the same Terry Garthwaite from "Joy of Cooking"?
I bought that record when it first came out--great stuff.
Only recently got into Mike D. and got "Beats Working"
and "Bottomlands" off itunes. I really like the way he
can play with an ensemble (esp. with Vassar Clements)and
cover both slide/fingerstyle & swing guitar. I want to be
Mike if I ever grow up.

I'm a friend of Nick Katzman. I haven't seen Nick in many years but I first met him when he was on the bill with Guitar Crusher at the Gaildorfer Bluesfest in Gaildorf, Germany in 1987. I was there with my own band. I lived in Germany for a long time and had a band with former Mother of Invention, Jimmy Carl Black. I now live in Philly and wish I could go see Nick but unfortunately I'm playing that night. Lovers of Delta and Ragtime blues should not miss Nick's show. He's a fantastic player on the electric as well as on the acoustic.
I have four CD's out in Europe and two CD's out here in the States. "Bohemian Life" (2003)is mostly electric and features 16 originals. Jerry Portnoy is my special guest and plays on three numbers. "Acoustic Roots" is my CD of Delta and Ragtime covers by people like Blind Blake, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Boy Fuller, etc. This CD was recorded totally live with me playing a 40's Gibson acoustic and sometimes I'm playing a National Tri-Cone. I do all the vocals and occasionally play harp on the rack. I'm currently working on a new acoustic duo CD with the amazing Steve Guyger on harp. Check me out at www.richardrayfarrell.com or at www.cdbaby.com
For those of you who aren't familiar with Steve Guyger check out his website at www.steveguyger.com
Steve was with Jimmy Rogers for 13 years and has a bunch of solo CD's and some great recordings with Paul Oscher.

A cool development for the Nick Katzman show. He received an email from the daughter of a former Gary Davis disciple who loves his music and she is now going to be performing with Nick at his Brooklyn show. I'll let Nick tell the story below in the email he sent me, but I went to CDbaby to listen to Thomasina's Winslow's music and was very impressed.

Ian-

Something good has just come up which may positively affect our gig on the
28th.

The story is this: three days ago I was getting my e-mail and was about to
zap what I thought was a peice of spam. At the last moment, I decided to
open it anyway and it turned out to be a letter from a singer/guitarist
named Thomasina Winslow who said she was covering tunes from my Kicking
Mule LP's on her new CD. Now, mind you, this is NOT an everyday occurence
for me, so I went immediately to CDbaby and listened to her recording. She
had a version of "I'm Goin' Away" where she played guitar at least as well
as I did and sang wonderfully. I was of course flattered
that someone was so involved with my music and very impressed with how well
she handled the material. It turns out that she is the daughter of a Gary
Davis disciple named Tom Winslow and apparently she grew up around the
Davis' scene and was pretty much brought up in a folk-blues household.

To make a long story short she said that I was a primary musical influence
for her, so I've asked her to come and do a guest apprearance at the gig,
and she said she'd come all the way down from Albany to do it, so it looks
like we'll be hosting Thomasina Winslow on that night, too. I'm not sure how much
exposure she's had or even how much she's done professionally. The
idea of my music somehow finding it's way back to young black musicians is
very exciting for me.

I'll be meeting her for the first time at the gig, so it should be an
interesting night.

Nick

Nick put on a great show, as usual. His first short set included two new ragtime pieces, one in the Scott Joplin mode, the other in the style of his old teacher Reverend Gary Davis. Both were very impressive. In the second set, he played mainly delta blues and mainly Robert Johnson, whom Nick covers about as well as anyone I've ever heard. In the third set, he brought up Paul Handelman, an excellent harp player and then, to everyone's great delight, Thomasina Winslow. She played three tunes solo, including a very impressive version of Nick's "I'm Going Away" (open C tuning), from one of his Kicking Mule LPs. Nick gave her a standing ovation. Then he and Paul joined Thomasina for "I Had a Notion," another of Nick's tunes. I suspect it's not the last time we'll see Nick and Thomasina perform together.
