I'd been thinking of pulling the trigger on a Variax Acoustic 700, so I played for for several hours today at my local GC.
My immediate impression was "crappy neck"! Very narrow spacing at the nut, and super chunky-fat at the back. Just the opposite of what I need... Seems designed for players used to electrics, at least in terms of string spacing.
Alternate tunings work OK, but there's no open C tuning onboard, and the big shocker: you CAN'T alternate-tune the 12 string models! (So much for my Kottke repertoire...)
On to the guitar models; the resos sounded very flat and tinny; 12 strings sounded OK except for the trebles, which are unison (as they should be) but have no 'doubling' sound at all and seem out of place, as if you removed your doubles of the B and E strings. :/ Parlor guitar sounded small and bass-less, (unlike my two real parlors which are very lively), nylon sounded like a muted steelstring; I did however like the sound of the jumbo model.
All in all, I decided to take a pass... I had high hopes of this thing solving some live playing issues, but if it means I still have to bring my 12 strings, it's no sale... :/

Hey Paul, did they have the foresight to program the OG's sound into that thing?

Hehe, shoulda! I brought it along for a/b comparison; musta broke it down and reassembled it a half dozen times for all the employees there... They all got quite a kick out of that little OG...
BTW, did you find your National yet?

I thought about one for awhile a year or so ago when looking to get an acoustic steel string guitar. However, I think that my Godin Grand Concert SA classical hooked to a Roland VG-88 and VG-8 sounds better and is much more versatile.

The VG's are programmable and there are some pretty nice acoustic patches available for the VG-8, which I think is the better of VG's for getting acoustic sounds. Don't know about alternate 12 string tunnings on them, though.
