damn.

on a side note: Contrary to the title (unless it's a title of a whole compilation), I would guess that to be "Red House," because it most definitely ain't "If 6 Was 9"

Not that it really matters.

Mike,

Tell me more. Who are these guys? Great guitar! Strange guitar the guy has. Looks like Savadore Dali got ahold of it.

Is the sax being heavily phased? or is it just poorly mixed?

The Charlie Hunter band, Garage A Trois. Charlie plays an 8 string guitar with fanned frets. This is because he is simultaneously playing bass and guitar. He is pretty remarkable. I played a show with him last year.

He's been ostracized and criticized by many "Jazz" guitarists as not being much more than a novelty, but I disagree--I think he's pretty great. He also has some amazing guitar faces. I was a big fan of D'Angelo, and Charlie contributed a lot to his 2nd album.

Oh, and to answer your 2nd question about the sax--it seems as if he's emulating an electric guitar and is miked and playing through a pedalboard.

The neck was an invention of Ralph Novak. He made some strat necks for Joe Louis about 15 years ago with the fanned frets.I'll say it sure was comfortable to play even though it looked weird

Ralph worked on all Joe's guitars back then. But Joe has always been more of avintage guitar guy anyhow
I don't think Ralph's design found it's voice until Charlie came along.Charlie's technique demands such an instrument

I've seen him and his trio a few times and this guy is worth the ticket. That video doesn't do him justice due to his rhythmic playing with the bass and lead lines. Even his CD's don't impart this live effect. Sax and drummer are great complements. Go see him!!!!

I saw Charlie Hunter many many moons ago when he was playing guitar with Michael Franti in The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy. Free concert in Central Park. Also on the bill: Billy Bragg and Pete Seger.

"Disposable Heroes..." Great group & great album from the early 90s.

Charlie's cool as hell. I still don't think he's bettered "Bing Bing Bing !" w/ Jay Lane on drums. That guy really knew what needed filling and how to do it. The TJ Kirk stuff I never dug but as far as bein' ostracized by the hard-core jazzers go, hell, that's like being disliked by the bluegrass Nazi's - something to strive for...

Yeah, I enjoy Charlie's music a alot. Posted some threads about him awhile back:

Madison Square Park Gig (pics with guitar and close up of his signal chain)

Montunos on Guitar

Fanned Frets

The synchopation of the basslines with what he does on the top is great. His remake of Natty Dread, funked up Songs From The Analog Playground, and the Latin Right Now Move are good albums to start with. He used to have some live shows from Yoshi's in CA available for download from his website.

Isn't he part of that Oakland,CA area high school music scene that's been putting out some of the more interesting jazz players in recent years (piano player Stephen Scott is another). Alvis, sounds you came up through that scene too (ps- Still getting lots of pleasure out of that Slingerland May Bell!!!)?

He used to live here in Montclair. Not sure if he still does.

One other thing of note is that he's playing all of those lead lines (and the bass lines) without a pick. Pretty incredible.

Hip to charlie? You bet! I first saw him live at a Tower Records lunchtime gig. I was browsing CDs when I heard this amazing B3-like sound that wasn't quite a B3 coming from the next room. Wonderful, innovative and funky player.

What's the actually doing there? My bass on the computer isn't too great, so I can really hear the bassline. Is he playing it with his thumb on the three lower strings?
