A recent thread by Nina asked for recommendations for a resophonic luthier in the UK and as a forum we came up with a suggestion. Most magazines & Forums have a well known list of recommendations but we all know someone who never gets mentioned. So between us all lets establish the most comprehensive worldwide resource list which each addition is cut and paste from the preceeding entry.
Lets try & keep it alphabetical and include people you would trust with your instrument or to buy from (I have included Dobro just in case they come good again!)
This will start you off so lets add all our collective knowledge to put the meat on the skeleton!

Considering that this forum is provided in part by me, that I wrote the book on Nationals, and that I have been a dealer and consultant for National since NRP was founded in the 80s, I think it is appropriate to mention:

REFERENCE AND SALES:

www.bobbrozman.com

And, there are also many other well-established long-standing National dealers :
Mandolin Brothers, Elderly Instruments, Gruhn Guitars, Gryphon Music, Buffalo Brothers

Bob,
sorry about the ommission ( I must admit that it looks like I am taking you for granted but I want people to add to this volume in a collective fashion, as it was to establish who out there builds, fixes and offers information I was not really trying to promote an individual) , I am trying to establish the definitive resophonic index where at the end all contributors will have access to the well known (yourself) and not so well known makers and sources of information.
Hope this comes through as well intentioned as I have no commercial interest in this, I just want to allow us to build the Resophonic yellow pages!
I included Lenny as in addition to his sale of instruments he has an interesting tour section/library of pictures.

I think the registry idea is a good one, but where are these service providers located? Does someone in the UK really care who does repair work in Tennessee?

I think that when the author says he would like to compile a wordwide resource list, it would include Tennessee, yes.

I've noticed that many well intended posts here often get denigrated into a pissing match between strong egos and differing opinions.

It is rare when someone actually posts helpful info about a guitar style or technique that will help the individual become a better player.

Having this guitar or that guitar is only a means to an end and the fact is that music can be played on any guitar.

Blah blahing about this cone, that resonator, "look what I got!" is all a load of crap and only wastes time that could be better spent playing music than sitting around coming up with self-percieved clever things to say here.

Of course, this forum wouldn't exist with out Bob and I think everyone here is in agreement that he is a fine player and one of the most astute and knowledgeable sources regarding resonator guitars.
He is also unwittingly, perhaps, responsible for the huge increase in vintage Nationals, in part due to his publishing his book and making many aware of these guitars and creating an increased awareness and demand.

Len happens to be a friend of mine, is a straight shooter and a fair dealer. Due to the increased awareness of these guitars that we all love and play, I personally am glad that Len has stepped into the fold because before him, the other known dealers(not Bob) that I had the displeasure of dealing with were dishonest and terrible salespeople, only out to make a buck.

With increased interest in both vintage Nationals and National Resophonic guitars, there is room for many and the individual buyer is free to make up his mind on whom he/she prefers to deal with.

Peace and Best Wishes

If I can remember correctly, Lenny did never advertise his guitars on this forum or other forums.
I can remember an interesting discussion about National using felt in some guitars on Messer's forum, and a great contribution of Lenny on that topic, to make just a little example here.

Vintagenationals' business is much well known because of its great quality service all over the world, one of the best way to get an old National.

My suggestion, once this list is a little longer, that it be broken down geographically as well.

Len--Nobody doubts your sincerity. Nor your passion. Sorry if you feel offended--no offense intended. I never meant to convey anything other than I should be included on the list of sales/reference sources, on my own forum.

Thanks for clarifying your position. I hope you understand mine. Now I understand yours.

The only REAL difference of opinion I have with you is that I think that vintage Nationals should not be taken apart unless there is a real reason to do so, other than cleaning.

I am sorry for the way the thread has caused a rift in the community as this was not my intent, just to establish the Resophonic Yellow pages which ultimately will benefit all in the resonator community through better networking especially with the storm clouds of recession brewing both sides of the pond.

Regards to all Lee

A forum is like someone's house, both with stated rules, and with unstated social protocols.

You probably notice that Mike Messer's forum officially allows no other advertising except for Messer products/events. Nobody there seems to mind. Yet when the subject comes up here, people start to howl. Why is that?

Mike Dowling, a professional musican and not a hobbyist, has always treated this forum very respectfully, never once posting about his camp or his National business. I know Len is a great guy and all, and very sincere. And also a California real estate guy who loses real estate business by doing his recent National hobby. No question there.

Mr Vesey, think about it. There is no longer an IGS. Why, then, do we continue to maintain this forum? I have asked myself that many times. I suppose the answer is: To provide a place for people to talk about guitars and music. A place where lesser experienced musos can get good info from more experienced musos. And for musicians to share their new youtubes, CDs, gigs, ideas, etc. Of course, sometimes, products and dealers must be mentioned in the course of discussion, and we have never had a stated policy forbidding advertising. We just assumed people would maintain a modicum of politelness and restraint. I have been slapped down pretty hard on other forums years ago for advertising IGS, so I learned early about that.....

Where do you suggest we go from here?

Overall, has this forum of 8+ years been a good thing or a bad thing? Let's dump it if it does not serve the wishes of the community. All I know is that these disputes really steal time from playing music. Got a gig today, gotta go....

I for one have learned from and (I hope) occasionally helped many folk here over the past 8 years, so my 'vote' is to keep the forum going.

I realize that there is some cost involved in running even a well established website, and would venture that you could well add a paypal/make a donation button to the site so those of us who appreciate your efforts can contribute.

Cheers,

Colin McC

I absolutely agree with the donations idea, as long as it's PayPal, otherwise I would be unable to contribute.

No more IGS? man, i was waiting and saving up all my nickels and dimes (got a 5 gallon bucket almost half full) I figured in 2 years i'd have enough experience and $ to enroll. Oh well.

This forum is great (except the upity BS) and has helped me broaden my musical listening and playing horizons!

I'm leaning towards this particular thread going away. There doesn't seem to be any sense in it as far as I am concerned. I fix guitars and amps and have been for years, I thought to myself that maybe I should list something here, or maybe get someone else to do it for me, but I really realize that it isn't what I want to do here. In reality, I was talking to a member here on the boards and he mentioned my recent post about a guitar that I was raving about and giving me shit for trying to sell it on the boards when it was the total opposite. I was actually raving about a guitar that I would love to keep for a good long time. I have to give it back to the owner..
Point is, that I find this board to be a great place where people can have thier say, speak candidly and rules aren't exactly a reality. It is a good goddamned thing to have. No offense to the notecannons folks, but I find that site too stuffy and gear-oriented for my liking and really appreciate the folks on this forum and thier unique ability to express themselves. I think when a guy has his website for the things he fixes on his signature, or another guy comes on and says he has time to give up to answer questions about guitar things, or people want to have a list of worldwide repair things... These are things that ask for trouble.. Why do you need to advertise your business here? Is it that you folks don't have enough work and you really need to be so tacky?
Again, this thread is asking for a penis comparison and it needn't be. It would be better to compare the color of the corvette you drive than have a bunch of folks list thier favorite luthier.
I can see Bob's point, and it needn't be made, that respect in someone's house is paramount. Why bite the hand that potentially feeds you with endless amounts of valuable information and inspiration? I think it would be bullshit to piss Brozman off and have the site pulled down because someone wanted to show off thier guitar fixing buddy. I guess he could have gone about it in a slightly different manner instead of leaning into lenny like he had some pent up grudge but in the end, we are all friends here and a thread like this is something that I believe belongs on one of the other chat boards, not on this one.
When this forum was first started, if someone wanted to list a guitar or service, they would ask first. Then it moved to people saying " I hope I'm not intruding by post this but..." Now it is a post about repair places and guitar dealers.... Next we will be inundated with sneaker ads and chinese gibson guitar copy ads...
Why not stick to the f-ing music?

1)"You probably notice that Mike Messer's forum officially allows no other advertising except for Messer products/events. Nobody there seems to mind. Yet when the subject comes up here, people start to howl. Why is that?"

Mike Messer's Forum has that official policy for Dealers. There is a section for individuals to sell guitars and other items.
People howl here because you do not have that policy. It's your Forum. You set the policy, not the users.

2)" I know Len is a great guy and all,...........And also a California real estate guy who loses real estate business by doing his recent National hobby. No question there."

Putting his National Dealership as his "recent hobby" does him and yourself a disservice.

3)"All I know is that these disputes really steal time from playing music."

Make policy on the stuff you don't like to see and have the moderators delete it. Why have disputes. If it's spelled out in the rules there shouldn't be any disputes.

Jeez, this forum is getting nasty. Everyone here wants the forum to stay around. Change or create some policy you want so there aren't arguenments about what to post.
