I recently came across a Stella guitar, the likes of which I've never seen before! Although it's not pictured in the 1923 Oscar Schmidt catalog, it is listed and described as "Model 403 Italian Style 10-string Guitar". These were offered with one sound hole for $4.00 and optional three sound holes for $4.50. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue how to string and tune this strange beast. Does anyone on this forum have any ideas? [This message has been edited by harpe (edited 04-26-2008).] IP: Logged |

Neil, what you have seems to be a "chitarra battente" which is usually tuned to A-D-G-B-E (head to toes), but you have to kep in mind that the tuning is re-entrant. The lowest string is the G which is the same as on standard 6 string, the highest is the E, which is also the same, and the ather strings are all inbetween those two. All the double courses are unisons (there are also chitarre battenti with some triple courses). For maximum effect, use unwound G-strings! The "chitarra battente" is used as a rhythm instrument to accompany songs and dances, so get together with a mandolin player and a 6-string guitarist and play those tarantellas! IP: Logged |

Mr. Mando, I had a feeling there would be someone out there who could help identify this instrument and tell how it should be tuned. Much thanks for your help! I can hardly wait to hear this thing! By the way, I found an old photo lodged inside of this instrument, showing not only a guy holding this instrument, but also a bagpipe player, a boy and a couple of their wine-drinking pals. Those pipes would be called a zampogna, I believe. (I have a friend with Zampogna as a surname, the only reason I would ever know this...) IP: Logged |
