I have been trying to play No Regrets. The Billie Holiday version. I just can't figure out the chord progression on my own. I have been trying to but no luck. I think she does it in E flat, it doesn't have to be that way if somebody has some other ideas. If anybody can play this one,,,,, and can give me some help, or maybe send me a website that may have the chord progression, I would really appreciate it. IP: Logged |

Great tune....played it with a couple of women vocalists over the years;one of the lesser played Holiday tunes...currnetly in the middle of a busy recording project over the past week....I'll post the changes for you tomorrow night. TheNewDeal IP: Logged |

I haven't quite tried to figure it out yet--but a dumb guess to a smart question: Think in terms of a Jazz progression instead of a Blues progression? I love Billie Holiday too, and want to hear New Deal's definitive answer too. Bet this would sound great on a Tricone!! IP: Logged |

I downloaded it from iTunes and will see if I can sort out the chords tonight. I found the lyrics by Googling. This is a nice song and I might add it to my repertoire. OK, I figured it out as best I could and transposed it into C (it was Eb). This is probably not perfect but it's a decent starting place. Would welcome any suggestions for yummy passing chords, etc. Very likely The New Deal has some ideas for it.

Nina, thank you very much. Thats a heck of a lot closer than I was getting. Was kind of looking for some jazzy swing chords, but that will have to do unless somebody else has some ideas. Once again thanks. IP: Logged |

You're welcome. That's probably the best I can do on short notice. You can always try subbing 6th chords for the majors and see how that works. I do think this is pretty close to what's on the recording. I was hoping someone else could help jazz it up a little bit. Usually I can come up with better more swingy arrangements but this was a little more challenging than others I've worked on...the line about the happy romance ending suddenly was sort of counterintuitive and awkward to me and it still doesn't sound quite right. At least it's a starting point. Thanks for the heads up, this is a good song and I enjoyed noodling around with it. [This message has been edited by Nina (edited 04-28-2008).] IP: Logged |

"No Regrets"....key of "Eb".....4/4 time With older tunes,in many styles, the pitch may vary slightly from 440;with this particular track,it sets in between Eb and E...however,the song was recorded in Eb. In my transcription,I'm going to list the guitar intro on two string sets, using the EXACT same voicings....learn both so you can manipulate either of these common chord move motions to other keys for useage in other tunes. Also, review the mathematical string set formula,I posted, for finding the same exact chord voicing on different strings sets in this old thread: http://www.guitarseminars.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/017293.html Intro: (hold the Eb and Ebdim.7 chord shapes down while executing the intro guitar arpeggios!) ||Eb=XX5XXX...XXX3XX...XXXX46...Ebdim.7=XX4XXX...XXX5XX...XXXX45...| |Fm7=XX3544...XXXXX6...XXXXX4...Bb13=XXX133...XXXXX2...XXXXX1...| |E13=0XXXXX...XX0XXX...XXX1XX...XXXX2X...XXXX2X...XXXX0X...|Eb/G=3X134X...|| OR: ||Eb=X,10,X,X,X,X...XX8XXX...X,X,X,8,11,X...Ebdim.7=X9XXXX...X,X,10,X,X,X...X,X,X,8,10,X...| |Fm7=X,8,10,8,9,X...X,X,X,X,11,X...XXXX9X...|Bb13=XX678X...XXXX7X...XXXX6X...| | (play the 3rd line the same as above, with the same E13 and Eb/G voicings).||
From the vocals after the intro rubato chords: ||Eb6=X6554X...| ./. |G7=3X34XX...| ./. |Cm=X3554X...Cmin(maj.7)=X3544X|Cm7=X3534X...C7=X3231X...| |C9=X3233X...| ./. |Fm=X,8,10,10,9,X...|Bb7=686766...|| (FIRST ENDING): |G7=3X343X...|Cm=X35543...|F7=X8786X...| ./. |Fm7=X8689X...|Bb13=6X678X...|| Back to the top of the "A" section at the vocal entry (Eb6 chord),and play the first ten measures, then take the SECOND ENDING,which is: (SECOND ENDING): |Eb6=X6554X...|C7=X3535X...|Fm7=X,8,10,8,9,8...|Bb7=686766...| |Eb6=XX1313...Edim.7=XX2323...|Fm7=XX3544...Bb13=XX6786...|| back to top of "A". For the last ending, hang on the Eb6 for the final two measures, and then end on an Eb6/9=XX5566...|| Notice the use of the diminished chord of the same root key letter in the intro, and the diminished chord a half step above the root key letter in the second ending turnaround.Revisit http://www.guitarseminars.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/017574.html Good night and good luck. TheNewDeal, you are an absolute legend. When are you finishing that book on chord progressions and voicings you were talking about a while back? IP: Logged |

Cool, so I wasn't too far off. Here's what I figured out transposed to the key of Eb: [Eb] [Ebdim] [Fm7] [Bb7] [Abm7] [Eb] No re[Eb]grets No re[Eb]grets No re[Eb]grets [This message has been edited by Nina (edited 04-28-2008).] IP: Logged |

quote: Thank you jb....I've actually finished the chord book you mentioned....I will self publish it,and advertise it in the trades, when financial fortunes abound;unfortunately my first lottery winnings just went into making a solo guitar CD....once I win the next lottery, hopefully soon, the promised book will be out...as always,I'm constantly chasing the great white whale in all these projects,in constant motion of turning negative energy into positive energy...as promised, you'll be the first to know, thanks, TheNewDeal IP: Logged |

quote: Nina--No,you weren't far off...good ear and keep at it...hearing the exact chord is a constant challenge and battle...this tune is very tricky...although the chord progression is a common blueprint, the sound of a minor vs. a dominant chord in a few of those measures is really subtle and tricky...e.g.=measures 5,6&7:the move from the Cm to C7 to C9...very tricky, and an unusual cadence for where the chords are changing...the Eb with the g note in the bass in the intro. Here's the three biggest factors in transcribing: 1.Get the bass note first. Eventually you'll start to hear the extensions of 6th's,9th's,13th's,etc...and then the altered tones(the 5th's and 9th's),but first get the correct tonality matched to the correct chord name. btw, hearing many of the more difficult chord voicings is simply a matter of repetition...think how easy it is for all of us to hear Em or G...if you heard Gm6/9 or A13(b9) just as many times as you heard Em or G,those chords would be just as easily recognizable to you. Thank you so much!!! I had decided that I was going to try and figure it out without looking on the internet for it, and got eflat and eflat dim and then fell apart. Back to the drawing board with my playing the changes thing. Thought I was getting pretty smart. Great song. Can't wait to go home and give it a whirl IP: Logged |
