I've heard that 12-string guitars played by "pickers" rather than "strummers" benefit from having the octave string positioned towards the treble side of the guitar, rather than regular 12-string style. ( Not sure if I'm explaining this clearly... ) Like this ( low to high ): Ee,Aa,Dd,Gg,BB,ee rather than what's "normal" for a 12-string: eE,aA,dD,gG,BB,ee I'm asking because I'd like to experiment with a 12-string acoustic set up with a tall nut, is it worth swapping the strings around as I'll be playing with thumb&fingerpicks? Thanks for your help on this... IP: Logged |

I believe that Rickenbacker 12s are set up this way. I've never tried one like this, but would really like to. I may try it on one of my Taylors some time. Let us know how it works out if you try it! IP: Logged |

I made a new nut and saddle for a 12 some years ago when lowering the action for fingerpicking. I changed only the G course, from gG to Gg. The effect was to mute the shrillness of the high g on the thumbstrokes, which doesn't always sound right with alternate thumb picking. Picking upwards with a fingerstroke, the high g rings out clearly. JB IP: Logged |

Chris, My Fylde 12-string is set up the way you describe, and I think it works a lot better for fingerpicking. Andreas : ) IP: Logged |

Standard string pattern (not sizes & tuning) seemed to work fine fingerpicking for Blind Willie, Leadbelly, Rev.Davis,etc,etc. If you don't like the G octave replace it with a unison, this can sound ok. Still no harm in experimenting if it suits your playing. IP: Logged |
