Ok, I've sat on the sidelines long enough to have a desire to post some songs also. Is there any simple system a computer idiot can buy, that will enable me to record and post with youtube or myspace? I could go to radio shack and ask them, but I'd like to ask the actual musicians who do this first. If this has been brought up before, I cant find it, plus there might be something new out there.. If no multi tracking is involved, just a direct recording, the simplest way today is a flash card recorder (Zoom, Roland, Tascam, etc...). They are cheap (200-400 ish), easy to work with, sound fine, and you upload the data in your computer by the USB connection for further editing. Idiot proof. Tons of threads on that topic ("flash recorder") Although you can record directly in the mp3 format, I don't recommend it. First, the original recording must always be done at the highest (reasonable) level of resolution available (typically 16bit/44.1 CD grade is fine, more is available if necessary). You can always make a controlled downgrade to mp3 after the fact. Second, there is no real sound editing application working with mp3 datas today. Just very simple utilities to, i.e., crop beginnig/end of a song. Not enough. Now, if you want only an audio notepad, mp3 recording is handy. You can record a lot on a card. If you plan to do multitrack, this is another story/topic. AFAIK, radio-shack don't carry these, but music stores do. You can download a free version of Audacity, an "open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems." It's pretty easy to use. All you need other than that is a microphone you can plug into your computer. Jean Paul's response was great, but it seems a bit much for a self-described "computer idiot". Just download Audacity at this link; plug in your mic and start experimenting. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ IP: Logged |

Hey Ron, This might be a bit more than you are looking for, but I record video lessons with a Panasonic SDR-H18 with a USB download to my computer. I edit with Sony Vegas Movie Studio. The clips I upload to You Tube and my website are in wmv format. By the way, based on your feedback and that of others, I have rerendered "Death Come Creeping" on my website at a lower bit rate and reduced the file size from 63MB down to 5.5MB! Wow! Have a look at it and see if the quality has suffered too much. I can render it at a faster bit rate for a file size of 16MB. Death Come Creeping is the only one I have rerendered. Hopefully you can now open it. Rick [This message has been edited by Rick McKeon (edited 04-30-2008).] IP: Logged |

I'm just beginning with 'Audacity' it's free to download and if you go into a little is a decent way to make basic recording of yourself. All you need is decent mic. My playing is still out of time and mainly out of tune. Think I need a more expensive program. IP: Logged |

I purchased Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8.0 at Fry's Electronics on sale for $60 plus there were two $30 mail in rebates, so it was free. But I paid $100 for three training videos from Vasst to help me get started - there is a bit of a learning curve. Uploading to You Tube is completely free, but if you get involved with this you will want high speed internet. People used to send me video clips and links all the time which I couldn't open (or wouldn't because it was so frustrating with just a dial up connection). Now with a high speed internet connection it is a whole new world. Rick IP: Logged |

Thanks everyone! I have been eyeballing that "zoom" for a little while, going to give it a try, I just want to do the basic youtube sit before the camera thing. IP: Logged |
